I am considering a S&W model 41 for squirrel hunting. I will want to add a scope. Which length barrel, scope mount and scope?
Thanks!
Jim

I would suggest the longer barreled version myself. I suspect it may be slightly easier to mount a small scope onto is why. I have never mounted a scope on any 41 no matter what length it is or was. Dosen't really matter as you are choosing a really great gun to start with.

A model 41 from 1994 or later is drilled and tapped for an optics mount; I presume this means the mounts are available. Personal preference on the optic itself - red dot, low power handgun scope, or maybe a 12X version to reach out and touch the really dangerous squirrels before they get too close...:).

I have an original 7 in barrel, but bought a new 5.5 from Midway that was drilled and tapped to mount a scope, then can have the best of both.

Some years ago, had two friends that competed with each other with bows, rifles and pistols. They loved to squirrel hunt with S&W 41s. One was a 7 3/8 (false muzzle) with a 2-7X scope (believe Redfield) and the other with a 7 3/8 (false muzzle) with a Weaver 4X - both the extended hold pistol scopes. Listening to them, 25 yds was a sure hit, 50 yards 60-70% and 75 yds (seldom tried) 25-30%. Used CCI std velocity. Yes these guys were GOOD with anything they shot.

I don't have a 41.. but I have a Colt Woodsman MT and Ruger Mark I's..

I say man up and shoot open iron...

Squirrels don't stand much of a chance at 50 yards open iron around me.. more sporting..IMO..

I always thought squirrels preferred belt-fed weaponry?

Agreed. Iron sights and a steady rest.
Get a Ruger MKIII with rings if you want to shoot with a scope, or a newer drilled 41.

Jim we don't hunt with Handguns in Canada. But we own M41's and M46's for sport shooting every week 12 months a year.
