Noticed the guide rod sticking out on cs9?
A modification?

Very, very nice collection. Thank you for sharing your family portrait. Most of your guns are models that I very rarely see offered for sale. And unfortunately, I was asleep during the time when S&W was bringing them to market so my only new purchase of a 3rd Gen. is my 4516.

No sadly it's because i can not find a correct recoil spring anywhere. Had a smith cut me one locally but its not right. The gun functions but the rod now protrudes.I some how lost the factory beat spring so right now sadly one of my favorite pistols to carry of all time is living in the safe gathering dust.

What am I missing here? Can't you just buy a new recoil spring from MidwayUSA? :)

A while back BMCM wrote some things about recoil springs.
What he said that I really liked was that some Glock springs are flat wound and the dimensions, ID, OD and coil thickness, are the same as some S&W springs...
The CS9 is one of those.
The picture shows my CS9 recoil spring next to a Glock 17 spring.
The factory CS9 spring has 16.5 coils... Why .5 I don't know?
Glock springs are easy to get... Just be sure it is flat wound.
I got a 17 lb and 20 lb that I was going to experiment with. Factory I believe is 17 lbs.

Just get it cut to 16.5 coils and you should be GTG.
A Dremel tool with a cutoff wheel should work.

Then you can get that CS9 back up and running!!!

CS9 recoil springs are currently in stock at Midway (Smith & Wesson Recoil Spring S&W CS9C CS9S).

I would agree with Bluedot that the guide rod looks to be too long for a CS9 (as long as the rod flange is still in place under the barrel). Looks like it could be for a CS40/CS45, perhaps. If it is too long, you'd just need to trim down the length by 1/4" or so with a file or dremel tool.

I would like to replace the plastic rod on mine with metal
Any ideas my friends?

The Glock 26 has a dual captured recoil spring assy.
You need the spring from a Glock 17.

As for the metal guide rod...
I think that they are solid except for the inner side.
So any 3rd gen rod of the same diameter, and I think most are, should be able to be trimmed to the right length.

Your best bet is to call S&W at 1-800-331-0852 ext. 4125 and order one from them. They'll get it in stock first if it's out of stock online - and at the best price.

Midway is currently 'out of stock/no backorder,' haven't checked Brownells or Numrich but they would be next on the list.

The other route you could go would be to purchase another .237" diameter 3rd Gen guide rod and cut it down to size, maybe cold blue the end if looks bother you. CS40/CS45, 4040PD, and 457 guide rods will work, with 2 of those options being 'in stock' at Midway right now.
