S&W - CS-9 or Walther CCP

I am thinking about obtaining a single stack 9mm compact pistol. My friends rave about the Walther CCP. I was thinking about an old 3rd Gen CS-9, similar to my CS-45.

You might be correct but I am barely into owning a polymer 9mm (I had a SIG SP-2022 but I sold it because I want a smaller one) and have not yet wrapped my head around Glock-type triggers. Call me a Luddite.*

The CCP has a more "normal" trigger or "revolver"-type trigger.

* I still carry revolvers most days!

A while back, when I was looking for an easy to rack pistol for my wife as a HD gun, I noticed the CCP. It felt great and did have a great slide for ease of operation.

The reviews in those early days of the CCP were pretty mixed, leaning toward unfavorable. Maybe things have improved, but I opted for an SD9ve for her. As a double stack, that doesn't help you.

I agree that the PPS M2 might be a better option to consider with the CS9.

If you like the 3rd gens, the DA/SA, the decocker, etc., stick with what you know and are familiar with. If you're looking for something different, the PPS seems to be a well liked option.

Ive shot both the Walther CCP and the CS9. I purchased the CS9. Smaller and thinner than the CCP. Lighter too.

The CCP is a very nice gun, but the CS9 is nicer. And easier to conceal too.

The PPS is a very nice gun as well. I prefer it to the CCP and every other current production single stack 9mm. Good trigger and reliable and accurate. A lot of gun for the money. BUT - I still would choose a CS9.........or any 39XX series gun over both the CCP and PPS. Good luck! Regards 18DAI

Kinda depends if you want a new gun with a new gun warranty, or don't mind buying a used gun for which it's going to be increasingly harder to get parts (and maybe service) in the future.

I don't know anything about the Walther CCP. You're on your own.

All I know about the PPS is what I read in the armorer manual. Do NOT ever try to "detail strip" the PPS. It has enough little loose parts and springs to qualify as an honorary cuckoo clock.

The CS9 was a very underrated pistol, containing all the good ideas and engineering of the 3913, but in a slightly shorter & lighter platform.

As much as I like my SW999c (Walther frame and slide parts, essentially the same gun as the P99 AS 9mm compact, but with a S&W produced bare slide & barrel), I really like my CS9 ... and 3913 & 3913TSW.

I really love my 3rd Gen, including my cs9s. It is a very underrated gun and was ahead of its time. Parts are getting hard to come by though. I've been looking for a guiderod for one of mine for a while now.

I also own the PPS M2. It is, at least to me, the best of the modern plastic single stack nines. I don't have any experience with the CCP but can whole heartedly endorse the PPS M2.

I'd say for most people the PPS will be the better choice if only because of the warranty and availability of parts.

A CS9 would still be my carry pistol if I hadn't lucked into a pre rail 3913TSW. Easy to carry and shoot. It's a great choice.

How much would you pay for one in excellent condition? (With box - a non-event for me but, still, interesting).

I paid 400 for my blued cs9.
Added Ashley Express big dot sights. Polished ramp and internals. I've had 3rd gens since the 80's. It's the best one I've had. Many gripe about the grips but they are no issue. All leather Glock 19/33 holsters will fit perfectly.

grcoffman's post put me over the top on this concept - blued for 400 - perfect!

And I love the fact that the Glock 19 holster will fit it. Holster searching is always a pain for these guns.

Similar to comparing a CS9 to a 3913/14, except the 3913 is itself thinner than the double stack 669/6906.

The chunky little Hogue grip stocks make the gun fatter, but also make it very easy-shooting and controllable.

ISCS Yoda If those are your only two choice then wrap your hand around each one and decide what you like the feel of best .

Theres a lot of good single stacks and a few double stacks that could serve you well .
I got to run a few mags threw a cs9 and was not real pleased with the general size . It would make a good pistol for some one that needs a smaller pistol . I already have a cm9 for that .

You mentioned the comparison to a 669 . Good pistol . Weight is heavier at 26oz less mag , fits the same size box as a 3913 but with a grip width of 1.21" with stock s&w logo plastic panels . How it fits the hand is different as the wider less curved back strap gives it a very different feel in the hand and more controllable recoil . Other wise what not to like about a 12 rounds in the mag and a 15 rounder as back up ..

The 669 and other like sized square trigger models fit some glock 43 holsters well for IWB needs . I wear a comp-tac neutral , a hybrid design and mines for a sig p320c but when the belts pulled up snug the thinner 669 works well it it . My wife use's the same holster with a kahr /1911 body and the 669 fits it really well . Square trigger guard and all .

Maybe you should lay hands on more pistols beside the CCP if a single stack is what you want as there a number of really good pistols out there but at the weight and size of the ccp there a few 9mm double stacks in that same class too .

If a 669 is a possible choice concider my p320c is the same weight as the 669 is only a .10 longer than a ccp , but no wider . 1.06 slide 1.18 wide grip when wearing a compact small frame .

I've had this for many years, comes out first before any other 9. Like fastbolt, I have no issue with the rubber grips, as I have big hands

I have done that some; none of them felt "off" or "bad" in my hand. I have a CS-45 already and have always liked it, even though I haven't carried it much in the past few years. If the CS-9 is some thinner than the CS-45 it will be perfect. And I agree with ladder13 - I have no problem with the rubber grips.

Besides, Luddite that I am, I have a personal preference for TDA pistols with decockers.

As you can see from the additional post above, I did the deal for the blued CS-9 with Big Dog grips but he says he is sending the originals, too, so I will have a fine choice.

Can't speak to the CS9 but I have a CCP and it is a bit tricky to maintain. Nice pistol but not all that easy to get along with.

No rails: the slide is guided by the fixed barrel and a bit by the gas piston and cylinder assembly—which must be kept as dry as possible, no fluid lube. Check out U-Tube videos on field stripping and, if you do get one, strip it in a transparent bag to avoid losing parts you were not prepared to be released by the clumsy take down.
