I purchased a 3913LS compact 9mm.

Perhaps I will carry it.

Do a lot of you carry old 3 gen guns? Are they still reliable?

Or are they past their prime?

Do the 3rd gens mostly live in the safe with range trips now and then?

Now days has the carry job been taken over by Shields and M&P 9c etc?

You Sir have the King of Concealed Carry! It will serve you and many generations after you......

I carry one daily. You will find it totally reliable, very accurate, easily concealed, easy to find holsters, magazines etc. for it as well

GREAT CHOICE!!!!!

Most 3rd Gens are too heavy. But I've been carrying this lately.

Every day I carry it's a S&W 3rd Gen, usually a 3913 variant (3914/908/3913TSW). Utterly reliable with all types of ammo, slim and concealable, and very safe to carry, load, &unload. IMO you picked up the ideal civilian CC pistol. If you're worried about losing it, good reason to pick up another to keep in the safe as backup (and another, and another... ).

While I prefer revolvers and have routinely carried J frames and snubbie K frames for years I recently obtained a CS-9 (I already had a CS-45) for the ability to carry it concealed. Small and flat, even as chubbed out as I am, I can hide it IWB in almost all of my clothes.

Are they still reliable?

Probably more reliable than almost any pistol out there. They don't lose their reliability because someone makes a different gun.

Or are they past their prime?

If one must carry the newest and brightest then your polymer pistols rule the roost but if you like your guns to be made from metal then, NO, they can never be past their prime.

Not if it's one of mine! I don't have many but, except for the safe queen, a 5903 SSV, NIB, no rounds have touched it, and none ever will while I own it, my CS-9 and my 6906 will see a lot of carrying. Maybe even my CS-45.

Only if you're partial to polymer and strikers............

The recently acquired 6906 has booted the G19 to the bedside. Along with the new 5903, they've sent the fantactical plasticals into deep hiding.
They both eagerly ran thru a variety of defense ammo yesterday.
Issues?? The 6906 said she has an issue' with bad guys....

Well, I'm an enthusiast, a life long handgun "hobbyist." Handguns are my true passion in life... I get a -lot- from owning, handling, looking at and shooting handguns and they are a multi-faceted experience for me. In that way, I cannot stand ugly plastic striker-fired Tupperware pistols in the way that I love handguns.

However, as a defensive tool, I think those ugly things work extremely well and so yes, I do carry one. It's a Walther PPQ. For what I ask it to do, it's excellent but this short paragraph is about as much as I've ever written about it in one post. ;)

There's no love beyond that, it's a screwdriver or a decent wrench.

My S&W pistols are guns that I love and most of them get shot a LOT, because that's what I enjoy doing.

However, I do use a S&W in a defensive role -- a "hardly used" S&W 469, a 2nd Gen that I snagged for very low money and it's the pistol I carry when I go places where I am prohibited from carry and it spends most of the time locked in the car where it may potentially be stolen. It is a fine pistol and will work well if needed but no, it isn't my primary daily carry.

I carry a 3913NL from time to time. Somehow it just feels better than my PPS 9mm. Essentially same size and weight, as far as I can tell. I'm selling a 3914 to a CCW student on Friday. She shot a LOT of guns during our class, and she just called last week and said "can I buy the 3914? I REALLY liked that gun." Since I still have my old 3913, I said sure. She doesn't know that I made her a holster for it this week. "3rd Gen, it's what's for dinner!"

I carry the 4513TSW, CS45 and 457, currently.

Before retirement I carried the 4506-1, 4566 and 39XX series guns on and off duty.

I carry them because they are bet your life reliable. Accurate and look good doing all that.

And I have no use for the plastic striker fired guns with their lousy triggers. Regards 18DAI

6904 most every day for years unless its my 1013 (a 4013 converted to 10mm by BMCM) never a bobble in either one to date. Carried the 6904 in a SD class as my son had my G19 in the same class. We found the 6904 was near impossible to make it malfunction for training. Finally to had load empty brass backwards as it would feed empty cases, to make it jam for stoppage drills

There has to be an exception to every rule... and when it comes to 3rd Gens, I am it. :p

With the notable exception of my CS40, I generally do not carry any of my 3rd Gens. And I own more than a few of them. :D

Why? Two reasons.

1) I am old and overweight. :o Doc says I'd have to lose 90+ pounds just to be considered obese. So comfortable carry for me usually means pocket carry... and for that purpose, very small, lightweight plastic works best. :)

2) My beloved 3rd Gen collection took a lot of time, effort and money to accumulate. It ain't easy up here in moonbat MA ya know. I would hate like Hell to drop, damage, lose, break or otherwise mess up any of my beloved 3rd Gens. Plastic I don't care a hoot about... but they ain't makin' them highly-desirable 3rd Gens anymore and so I guard mine with my life. ;)

Here's the way I look at it. I have a 3913, & would trust my life with it. But it was hard to find, & if I need to use it, & go home that night, my 3913 will sit in an evidence room for a year, & I may, or may not get it back. So I carry a Shield, so if it goes to the evidence room, I go to the store, & get another one for $300. So I do NOT carry my nice guns. Just ones that can be replaced cheaply in 10 minutes. GARY
