I'd go back with only $300 on hand. Gun, sales tax, and any other fees for $300.

Got a real clean one a few months ago for $310 OTD. If a Pawn Shop is "asking" $325, he probably got it for $100 from someone who was desperate for ca$h. I'd offer $300 OTD.
It's a good, solid pistol. It is the 2nd Gen version of what was later the 6904 (6906 stainless.)
There is almost NOTHING "collectible" about this model, there likely never will be. It's all about utility. For that price, I would want the 6904/6906 as the 3rd Gen is indeed better.
I have a 469, also with an A-prefix and in the range of that one. A solid tool, nothing more. In my opinion, if you can't get absolutely out the door for $275, keep looking.
However, if you like it, it's solid as a rock and if you own/shoot/love it for the next 10 years, it really doesn't matter if you spend $50 more that I would.

I rather enjoy finding another couple of 469 (669 and 690xx, I presume) aficionados, clearly you guys are there. For me,
and should others quantify dedication, the 469 and near cousins just mentioned rank just behind my Model 39 collection.
And, yes, that $300 - $325 is a very good price range whilst looking at it from this distance.
One of my resources when on the hunt for specific firearms is Collectors Firearms in Houston, Texas. I've bought S&W handguns there (indeed, most recently a Model 39 just two weeks past) and often compare Collectors' handguns to those I'm pondering.
They're good people at Collectors, do things totally right and are pretty particular about what they put on the Web. As such, you'll find the prices they quote generally are on a higher end of the price scales. Should one have a firearm that looks like one of those at Collectors (finish, etc.) but cost less, well, my reckoning is that one is looking at a good deal. Now, I use other sources like Bluebook.com, whose coverage gives me a picture of middle and lower ground prices, as well as the upper end but it's a subscription service and you'll need to buy one to access the service.(which I recommend, especially if you buy and then are prone to quickly sell firearms).
In a sustainable trend he 469 and cousin prices have been edging higher over the last couple years. At least one recent magazine article offered the thought that they are desirable carry guns, something with which I'll not argue.

Buy it. The 469 was a factory carry gun patterned after the ASP, Devels, and similar. I think I gave $300 for my first 469 and $350 for my satin nickel one. Perfect carry gun about the size of a Glock 26 but heavier.

469 produced in 1983-1989,30 years ago. 10 years from now,a thread will be,I saw a 469 for 400,is it worth it. 20 years from now,a thread will be,I saw a 469 for 500,is it worth it. I think we should consider ourselves lucky for the current values/pricing of common 1st,2nd,& 3rd gens.

Many love the 469 and 669 and they are reliable pistols, but the third generation versions are better. For a second generation 469, no box, no spare mags, light wear on the finish, $300 with $325 being the maximum.
And, as Warren Sear pointed out, many had a problem with the manual safety. S&W issued a recall, but many second generation pistols were never returned to the factory for service. I don't know if S&W is still honoring this recall, especially on second hand pistols.

This is the first I have heard of a problem with the safety. What, exactly, was the problem?

I'm glad you've had good experiences at Collectors. I won't paint with a broad brush, only say that I and a few people I know have had experiences which were less than good at that store.
As far as that 469, it had better be in excellent condition for almost $700. The listing doesn't mention a box, the paperwork, and original equipment, all of which add value, of course. The other 469 prices, all north of $500, also seem high to me.
One good thing about Collectors is their massive inventory. I love to browse there even if I won't buy.
In Ft Bend County, I picked up today a 469 in what I consider very good condition for $250 out the door. One mag, no box, serial number in the TAE range. The salesman was happy at the price and so am I.
