39-2 magazines?
I am not a semi-auto fan, but when a guy has everything else (ha, ha) he must branch out. So I picked up a 39-2 because I like their looks. I had never fired a 9mm also. So after long last, over 500 rounds standard pressure loads, I can keep all hits on a sheet of printing paper at 15 yards. I do so much better with K Frame revolvers. Meat of the question is, What must I look for in one or two magazines? Must they be specifically for 39-2? Must I bleed out for the original? Might after market suffice? Thanks for the quiet time forum entertainment.

Stick with genuine S&W magazines. You can still find used 39 and 39-2 magazines on eBay, firearm auction sites, and at gun shows. Magazines for the 3904/3906 will also work, hold one additional round, but do extend beyond the bottom of the receiver.

39 mag in 39-2?
So apparently a no dash mag is usable in a 39-2? I thought I read somewhere that they would not. But no one should believe everything in print, unless it is on this board, ha.

When I bought my 39-2 my search for another magazine started. Looked on EBAY and GB and while they were there, they were more than I wanted to spend at the time. While looking around at a local shop one day I asked if they had any spare S&W mags. The guy pulled down a box and asked what I was looking for, and started looking. pulled out a stock 39-2 mag, said $25 and I could have it. I about sprained my arm getting my wallet out.
So they are out there. Can't speak as to who makes a decent aftermarket mag since both I have are factory.

If I can easily find them here in Montana, there should be an abundance in pawn shop, and local gun stores. Most of them have a box of misc. magazines. Bring yours as a comparison, maybe even bring your gun to double check fit and function.
All I have ever used are marked S&W however.

I will join in with the group that says:
--buy only GENUINE S&W
--3906/952 mag is totally functional and doesn't look horrendous, it simoly won't look "period correct" and is a fantastic option simply for utility
--genuine S&W magazines that look right, fit right and run properly were made literally from the mid-1950's all the way through the 2nd Gen 439/539/639, as late at 1987. In 39's alone they produced on the order of 400,000 pistols, which means these magazines are NOT scarce, so don't pay through the nose to get a couple.

Numrich makes a repro magazine that is a dead bang ringer for the original S&W's with the metal "X" style follower... the only discernible difference is the floor plate does not have the "S&W" marking.
I've purchased a few of them and they run fine in my 39-2.

I can't find original Smith 39 or 39-2 mags in my area for love nor money. Hopefully I will see some at a gun show here in town next month, got three Sig P6 mags I'll try to swap, but will buy any I find outright if I have to. Can't find 59 mags either, but luckily MEC Gar 59 mags are still available.
