Default S&W 422 6"

I found a 422 6" with walnut stocks and adjustable sights in my travels to day.

Serial # TBS7468

I've owned a 4.5" 422 with fixed sights since the late 80s. It's currently outfitted with a adapter as a suppressor host so i have plenty of extra mags for the 6".

It was a bit dirty but it cleaned-up pretty good. I'm into it for $150.00.

I always considered the 422 to be far and away a better field pistol than the Rugers. Lighter, slimmer, and with much better triggers.

I have a 2206 and it's a solid pistol. I believe that the 422/622/2206 are all better, much better pistols than the S&W 22A and new Victory models, but I can't agree that they are better than the Ruger Mark II.

Your 422 for $150 is a helluva buy, an absolute no-brainer, no hesitation purchase, great snag. Many will be jealous.

I will hold firm in my position that none of this series, not a one of them, is visually attractive. I believe they are all varying degrees of homely and the most elusive vent rib versions just double down on the ugly.

Good find. I have two 4.5 inch 422s and and two 6 inch 622s. All fixed sight. The 4.5 inchers shoot a bit low for me, but the 6 inchers are dead on.

Are you aware of any good holsters for these?

It (6") fits perfectly in a surplus Swedish L40 Lahti holster with storage for two extra mags.

They are very well made and still available at reasonable prices. There is one on eBay now for $13.00 shipped, it just needs a good cleaning/re-dye.

Here is the 6" in a rather well worn example I have. There is even a slot for a cleaning rod and patches.

I had read that a lot of folks use a Hunter 1100-5 holster for their 6" 422/622s. It's made for a M1911.

I dug around in my footlocker-o-holsters and found one. It works fine and doubles for my 4.5" 422 with adapter.

This commercial M1911 "over the shoulder" holster w/mag pouch works fine too. It's a perfect fit for the 422 4.5" w/adapter but about a .50" sticks out on the 6".

I suspect there are lots of M1911 holsters that might work.

Thats almost Armed Robbery getting that 422 for that price. In my area it would be near $450.---$500. easily. You have a sharp eye for a Bargain.

Hands down my favorite S&W .22 autos. I have the adjustable sight 4.5", and 6" models and the 3" 2214.
These were simply the highest quality .22 autos that Smith ever fielded short of the 41 and 46, and the market has recently begun to reflect that.
Good score, rolandj! I would have dislocated my shoulder reaching for my wallet!

Anything less than $350 for a target wood grip 422 or 622 is a great price! Great find.

What I really like is the fact that it likes the same Magazines as the M41 and M46 as Well. Should also mention the 622s also.

My 6" target sighted 422 w/wood grips, that I picked up shortly after Thanksgiving for $325 (no box or goodies) is serial numbered TBT52XX... It was VERY clean in nearly "As New" condition. I did a Hammer/Sear swap/upgrade as a beta test and now the trigger pull is 2.12 lbs. Making it a sweet shooter. I love this line of guns.

I like the 422 better than anything S&W has put out since. Put a pair of
the black grips from fixed sight model on your gun if you are going to carry it a lot. Saves wear & tear on the target grips. I restiched a old Safariland lined holster to fit mine. They make a good kit gun. Dependable and accurate. They may not be classic looking but you have to admit if you call them ugly, how do you describe the newer series of S&W auto loaders.

Very nice and an excellent buy.

Since this is your first adjustable sight 400/600 series pistol, check the screw that holds the rear sight leaf on regularly; it has a tendency to loosen and you might find the sight assembly headed back and up at just under the velocity of the slide.

Enjoy!

I made a disassembly "dingus" for my 422. If memory serves a plastic one came with them NIB.

One side is shaped to the curve of the front of the slide area while the rear is dished out a bit for the end of the rod.

I just used a piece of brass rod I had, shaped it, then D&Ted it 6-32 and used a 1" 6-32 bolt with it's head cut off.

Works great and a whole lot better than a empty .22 cartridge case. I made it just a tad longer than a .22 case so there is less movement but gets the job done.

Very well done. I use a cut off golf tee to get the job done.

Steal of a deal on that 6” 422! I just put the finishing touches on my “old school” 422 4” target project. I sighted it in today. I’m getting quarter size 12 shot groups at 50 feet with Remington subsonic ammo and cycles perfectly. Could not be happier!

A great deal sir! I was only able to get a 4-in and a 6 before I left the US in '98. I have ran into several on GB but the going prices for near-NIB are way out of my price range. No .22 is more reliable in my opinion ... although they prolly don't have the longevity of a 2206 or 41.

The contact, there, isn't anything as bad as the slide and barrel contact with the aluminum frame of, say, a 6906 or 3913, but still some contact. Second part, my 622, has some slight peening of the aluminum frame where the slide stops when going back into battery. I'm reasonably sure that S&W designed them so that the slide would be stopped, solely, by the barrel extension tube (again, not sure of correct term). That said, mine hasn't been fired much and shows a little bit of peening there. I will try to dig it out and post a picture.

My comment wasn't intended to impugn the 422/622 in any way at all - I will continue to buy as many as I can afford ... which is so far zero additional for the past 20 years ...

Great minds think alike... I made this about a year or so back out of frustration with not being able to find an original.

Like -ALL- three alpha SN prefixes, these were only ever in a "loose" order so without a call to S&W or a factory letter (or if you have your original box with end label), the SCSW-4th can only give a close guess.

That guess for the TBT-xxxx series is 1989.

This is how it was explained to me, but it not guaranteed to be accurate by me. But it does make a lot of sense.
On original boxes there is a four digit code. On the original box my 422 came in the code is 8139 for ser.# TBT78XX This is how it was explained to me: The 8 is for the year 1988 the 139 is the 139th day of the year. Thus Wed. 18 May 1988 is the date. I do not know if that is the shipping date or the receiver made date. Most likely it is the receiver made date. If you have your original box try it and see what you come up with. If it is important to you to know for sure you will need to request a letter from S & W at a cost of $75.00 I think. No problem if you think I am off my rocker.

You are not off your rocker, haha. It has been said that a phone call to S&W can get you a date. I am also unsure if it is a frame date or a ship date that they give you... I have never called and asked.

I called and asked for a date for my 2214 (UAH28xx). I was given a shipping date of Nov. 1994 for it. I asked for info on the 422 hoping someone had the book close by. Thanks rolandj for checking the code on your box and Sevens for the possible prefix interpretation. I may end up calling S&W CS anyhow.
