Looking for information regarding the 3rd gen 4586 DAO pistol everywhere i look it is a difficult one to find info on

I have one, fairly easy to come by on web.. I know Idaho State Police issued them in 1991. I do not know how many were produced.I would guess between 1991-1993. There may have been other LE special orders in later years. Hopefully someone will be able to provide more info on this model. The other models DAO were the 4546, 4556.

Not sure exactly what you're looking for but here's some basic info:
4-1/2" bbl, double action only (DAO) trigger, stainless steel slide & frame, 41oz., single stack (8) round mag, mfd. 1991-1999, quantity: unknown (fairly common though).
All the normal 3rd Gen safety features. The fully supported chamber can handle up to 45 Super power loads with only a heavier recoil spring.
It's a heavy duty 45ACP sledge hammer.

Late 80s-90s S & W was introducing a myriad of different 3 Gen variations.
The information provided here is spot on.
It is the DAO version of the 4566. The same model with an alloy frame is the 4583.
There is also a TSW variation of this model. I have a 4586TSW but not sure what year of production. I has the tacked on black rail.
Smooth double action, great gun.

Rare birds since these were marketed to police and law-enforcement and not the general public. I have one since my local department changed to M&P 45's and sold their old 4586's to local FFL's. They're going to M&P 9's now for the wimps and women on the force that can't handle 45ACP.

I'm not a big fan of DAO autos generally, but a couple of years ago I ran across a this pristine 4586 at a LGS on consignment at an excellent (So. Cal.) price. It seemed to fit well with my 4566 and 4576. If it was a LE pistol, it must not have been issued because it shows no sign of holster wear nor was it shot much, if any. The pistol functions perfectly and shoots pretty well, too.

My father was Idaho State Police from 1973 - 1994. He was on the selection committee in 1990 when ISP was looking for an auto pistol to replace the Model 65. The SIG - Sauer P220 (45 ACP) was their first choice and the 4586 was the second. The P220 was too expensive, but the 4586 was the right price for the state of Idaho. The 4586 wasn't on the market in the summer of 90 so dad and the other troopers on the committee were firing "tool-room" models. When he retired in 94 ISP gifted his 4586 to him. I inherited it and his 4516 (top) when he passed away in 2016. The 4586 has a very smooth trigger action. It and the 4516 are very strongly built pistols and they will feed all types of loads with aplomb.

Funny timing on that question. I've had a Post-It note stuck to my monitor now for about a week to remind me to do a "spring test" on the 4586 & document some different recoil springs in it.
(Also want to do the same test with my DW 9mm 1911 that I fitted a 38 Super barrel in & need to decide on a recoil spring for it.)
On my 4506 I currently have a Wolff 20# recoil spring (#47320) & a Wolff 18# mainspring (#27518) in it.
Previously I tried/tested it with a factory S&W recoil spring (#201610000) & a Wolff 22# mainspring in it.
The two were pretty close on the initial & mid power but the 20# recoil gave the best power at full compression.

On my 4586 I originally used a Wolff 22# recoil spring (#47922) & a Wolff 20# (#27520) mainspring. Two coils had to be cut off that recoil spring because it was too long & the slide would bottom out on it, instead of the frame abuttment, when fully rearward. (This setup used the regular diameter guide rod, .290").
Currently the 4586 has a ISMI flat recoil spring (GLC-18) & a Wolff 20# (#27520) mainspring in it. You have to use a modified guide rod (.253" dia.) as the flat springs have a smaller core diameter (.264").
The 4586 handles any of the (+P) or Super loads I use with this setup. I just wanted to be able to relate some numbers to it.
FWIW, the 5" slide/barrel weight of my 4506 is slightly lighter than the 4.25" slide/barrel weight of my 4586 (17.6oz -vs- 17.9oz). Weird.

Follow-up data
I did the recoil spring test I wanted to do & removed my Post-It note.
First off, I verified that I was using a ISMI GLC-18 spring & not a GL-18 spring that would seem more appropriate.
Secondly, I was unable to find why I changed to that spring considering this test showed the Wolff 22# spring (even with two coils cut-off) is the stronger of those tested.
The ISMI GL-20 & 22 springs are longer/more coils but they didn't register quit as much force as the GLC-18.
I installed the Wolff 20# recoil (one coil had to be removed as it's too longer otherwise) as an in-between power spring & will make it my 45 Super recoil spring going forward.
