The price of 39s...
whats going on? Any pre, 39s and 39-2s have gone goofy.
Even mags, grips and parts. I told that guy that wrote that doggone Thread on the Seductive Power of the 39 that this was going to happen. Oh boy I have initiate a duel. Blood in the sand.
Just a WINK! No insult intended. Water balloons at 10 paces. Mike

I guess I just made it under the wire. Bought a nice 39-2 with two early metal follower magazines in December before the shows shut down for $250. It had pachmayer grips on it but I had a set of factory wood in the junk box so it is back stock.

I have never seen a full size second gen for $250. That was an irresistable bargain, even without the extra mags!

39-2 is a 1st Gen and... wait for it... better pistol than the 2nd Gens! If we are gonna have a water balloon fight between 1-2, I’m definitely on Team 1st Gen! Better everywhere that matters most to me.
$250 is under market for nearly any 39-2 that functions. Maybe if if the finish is completely destroyed and the stocks are missing and no magazine. But if the rear sight is intact and the pistol feeds, fires, extracts and ejects, $250 is a $25-$50 low in bottom grade finish. That was a nice buy.

Hello OldK, 39 grips are not kept in the junk box anymore. Not with what they are going for. Pls post part of your Sn., so I can guess what type mags you got. Like A123XXX. Mike

I"ll say. Thought $450-500 is the going price for one in decent condition. Trouble is just seeing one is kinda rare in my area.

A125xxx should be 1970. I put a plastic follower magazine in it and put the two metal follower magazines up. They are the ones with the split in the front of the follower kind of like a v. A little holster wear but pretty clean.

I'm not looking to sell my pre-39, but I figure it's worth $1200. Which seems crazy! Hard to find many comps out there.

I sold a LNIB nickel 39-2 at the same show about 30 minutes after I purchased the blue 39-2. I got more than $250 for the nickel one. The $250 for the blue one included covering the cost of the plastic follower magazine and the factory wood stocks as I sold the pachmayers and the holster it came in for what I had in the stocks and magazine.

Hello Old K22, I have Sn. A120XXX shipped May 1970 with two metal followers that are split like a V. The mag. bottom plate stamped S&W
is the long variety, should be 1 5/8" long. Good snag.

I have two 39-2’s. One is high condition but not mint, the other is a re-import beater that likely has camel fur in it.
The one that is much nicer was a gun show pickup and without digging in to my records, I’ll say it was maybe 5 years ago. $400 got my the pistol but missing original wood stocks (wearing Pachmayr) and no box but two magazines.
I paid more for my no-dash 39 but that was only 2-3 years ago.

Yes, you are right. I accept my water balloon without the blindfold or cigarette.

I love a 39-2 for a shooter, one of the most comfortable hand fitting handguns made. Accurate, reliable, rugged. I was able to but 4 original mags from a friend for $50. Plastic followers, but 100% functional.

Hello Mallard, not an ASP but a military mag first seen in the late 50s.
A factory offered part. Not often seen.

ASPS have a different base and were shorted. There is a early Model 39 that S&W made for military called Hush Puppy - used in Vietnam to kill dogs. I can't find any information about those magazines. I am collecting information for a possible book on magazines.

The Hush Puppy pistols had lots of interesting modifications but I don't believe there was anything special or different about the magazines. What leads you to think so?

Kevin, is this the one with the locked slide and then jack the slide to eject and feed the next round? Neat design. Mag looks like a std. commercial steel follower. best
