I saw a 2 tone (Black slide and SS frame) and ported barrel Model 4506. It is an early production gun as well. 1988 or 1989 I and I do not believe there was ever a 2 tone 4506 produced. This one has hammer, trigger, decocker and old style adjustable sight black as well. It's a sharp looking gun.

Does anyone know if there were ever any special orders from a Lew Horton or other distributor that might have been modified and sold this way?

S&W never sold any ported barrels in 4506 as a cataloged production gun..as far as I know.

Well, I have been dealing with 3rd gens long enough to know - never say never. But that one appears to be after market coating with a porting job. Nice gun! :)

There were a few 4506-1s - < 5 - that were all black, from the factory. These were done when S&W was experimenting with Melonite/Nitride coatings.

And there was at least one two-tone 4506-1, from the Performance Center no less. Black slide and Briley barrel and bushing. The owner is a member here. Maybe he will post a pic. ;) Regards 18DAI

I have seen this gun for sale also. I am certain this was aftermarket work. Stepped frame, gen 2 the label on the side of the box indicates "S" stainless late 1988 production. Personally I think these mods detract from the value of an original unmodified gun.

The Book says 500 two-tone LAPD special order guns...
"LAPD Special: 500 Manufactured. for the Los Angles Police Department Factory Engraved slide with LAPD Badge on Grip- fancy wood Presentation case- Two Tone finish 45 ACP -8-Round Magazine Initially sold at the LAPD Pistol Club Shop for $ 969.95, later closed out through distributors at $ 659."

Aegis I always thought mods detracted from a S&W pistol or revolvers value. That is true if you are keeping or buying a gun as a collector piece.
But I think on semi auto pistols especially, mods don't decrease value they just decrease the potential buyers pool.
I used to be dead set against buying a semi auto that was not all original. It has become much more the norm though that someone buys a semi-auto and upgrades it. I believe the AR 15 and AK 47 craze of modifying a stock gun spilled over into semi autos. Of particular note are CZs, Glocks and Sigs and M&P pistols.
So much so that CZ sells a pistol stock that you can send straight to their custom shop and have it upgraded before ever seeing it.
So I have softened greatly on that no-mod mindset in past 2 years. Unless of course I buy that semi auto for collectability.
But those candidate guns are few and far between. Especially pistols being made in last 15-20 years.

That's a great looking gun! The porting and finish on the side were well done.

And don't forget the small number of 4505 carbon steel Smiths. Matt black finish on the frame a a bit more polish on the slide. Back when it was a duty gun, I had Armaloy do their matt chrome finish on the frame. I've probably posted it here before.

For some reason, I don't see a picture of it.

We can't link auctions or sales from other sites, but if you go to a well known one and search for the gun in this thread, I guarantee you'll find it [emoji6]

Found it. Nice looking gun.
That porting job looks like Magna Port, to me.
In the mid 1990s, my buddy's dad bought a brand new, Magna Ported, 4" 629 from an LGS.
I wonder if one of the distributors got some Magna Ported S&Ws as a special order?

Zero potential as a future collectible, but nicely done aftermarket work. I'd snap it up as a shooter if the price was right.

There is a ported no dash for sale here in the classifieds. No pics, $600. I wonder if its the same gun? Regards 18DAI
