It finally cooled off here so I was able to get out and test fire my new to me S&W 5904 9mm. Obviously, it has it's share of holster wear but the bore, rails, breech face & internals looked to be pretty good. I did put a new factory recoil spring in it after cleaning & lubing and before testing though the old one was only 1/8th " shorter. The person I bought it from was unsure of it's previous history , whether it was ever a LE sidearm, etc. I'm guessing it was made about in 1989 but perhaps one of you more knowledgeable 3rd Gen fellows can say for sure based on serial TCV2246. Though I had a 659 many years ago this is my first 3rd Gen. With shipping and FFL transfer I gave $375 for it.

During the session I used Speer Lawman 115 gr. FMJ, Speer Lawman 147 gr. FMJ and Federal American Eagle 124 gr. FMJ. I used the older factory S&W 14 round mag that came with it and a new Mec-Gar 17 rd. mag. Both pistol and mags functioned flawlessly. Primer dents were generally well centered and adequately deep. Ejection distance was pretty consistent @ 8-10 feet and most landing @ about 4-5 o'clock. One of the pictures is a 3 shot group fired offhand at 7 yards near the end of the session. I certainly do not profess to be a great handgun shot but it seemed to be at least combat accurate in both double and single action. I'm very pleased with it so far.

I always kick myself for not seeing to getting a 5906 trade in when the local PD switched to Glock years ago.

Good looking early production 5904. I personally like the alloy frame S&W semi autos than the steel or stainless steel frames. I carried several S&W auto pistols in my career. My 5904 was a very good duty pistol and totally reliable. We had to load empty brass cases or dummy rounds to induce stoppages for training.

Thanks all.

It is the older, pre recall grip. What are the ramifications, if any, if I keep using it instead of the post recall grip as long as it's not dropped and breaks ?

It may eventually start to crack around the pin area anyway even without having been dropped.

Nice pistol. Have a 5906. Absolute zombie apocalypse pistol. So smooth and will run all day long on anything fed. Would like a 5904 as well, just haven't run across one lately.

Those 3rd gen S&W pistols are the cream of the crop. Reliable and accurate for duty sidearms. The steel receivers will certainly last forever, but the aluminum receivers reduce a lot of weight, making them easier to tote all day and the aluminum receivers are usually sufficiently durable to last a lifetime.

SW will probably replace grip for free - they are replacing on my 5904 which went back for a different problem. And I understand they will send you replacement grip if you contact them and provide info on gun.
