Default Considering a Model 5944

I am hoping to purchase a 5944. I currently own a 4586, 4516-1 and a 4513. I've become a fan of Smith's older pistols and I really like the 4586 double action. I've been looking for a 3rd generation 59 model and the 5944 fits the bill. Plus I like the blued steel/alloy look. I'll let you know if it goes home with me.

That is a handsome looking Model 5944. My only DAO S&W pistol is a 6946. I like it and it is my normal carry arm. The biggest issue that I have found is in holster selection. There seem to be very few with a thumb break strap made for the DAO Smiths. My 6946 does fit ok in some holsters designed for the Beretta 92. Open top holsters are easier to find, just get one that is molded for the trigger guard shape.

As a lefty I'm used to not having as wide of a selection of holsters; though it has gotten better over the past 30 years. I have a Milt Sparks holster that I had made for my SIG P220 back in 2003 and it fits the 5686 pretty well. I also own a couple holsters for a Beretta 92 so that's good to know. Thanks.

I have a 5946 (DOA) that fits in my old 5906 holster just fine. No safety/Decocker lever to gouge me makes me happy. My 4046 is a tick wider through the slide and is a bit too snug in that holster however.

That 5944 is a good looking handgun. I don't think I've ever laid eyes on one myself, until now. Hope the sale comes through for you.

Got my fingers crossed. I was going to pass it by, but after thinking about it decided it was unlikely another one would come my way. Smith only made that model for one year and I haven't found any production numbers, but it couldn't have been a massive amount.

Got it. Won the bid at $495.00. I'll pick it up on Friday.
