S&W 4556: A Rare 3rd Gen piece
Has anyone come across this rare firearm? Research indicates only 400 were produced. I have yet to see any for sale on any of the online platforms like Gunbroker etc. Given limited production run, I would imagine there is upside potential.

They are beauties! With a limited production run, this particular model will enjoy upside potential.

The 4th Edition Catalog, granted the prices are a bit dated, and conservative but directionally correct.
VG 650
Exc 750
ANIB 1000.
Maybe add a few hundred to each?

Been tracking serial numbers for a while, so far TFS1562-TFS2039 (although my screen grab of TFS1562 seems to be missing). People with production letters have stated "only about 400 made", but I have yet to see that clearly shown.

There needs to be an update to the book. Many of the 3rd Generation pistol values have gone through the roof particularly the S&W 10mm series.

Like almost every book published, the information is almost immediately obsolete (in this case, the $$ values). Lots of factors enter into this equation, notably factory direction changes, new safety features, models being deleted from production, etc.
The Third Gen models never gained any real popularity when they were in full production, except for a few folks that loved them, but now, when the world has converted to plastic fantastic, they are being followed for what they are, exceptional pieces of mechanical engineering and visually appealing firearms....
Taking nothing away from the SCSW, it's a fantastic piece of work, and appreciated by me and others, but values in many many areas have taken a turn to the positive over 5-10 years back.

I completely agree; the book offers a wealth of information and it’s my go to when I need to look up data on a new model Smith & Wesson. Look forward to finding out an accurate production unit run.

I bought one on GB and sold it here, so they are around. Great gun which I enjoyed trying, but I was focusing elsewhere.

I checked my historical letter on the 4556. This model was introduced in the fall on 1990 production ended fall of 1991 due to lack of sales/interest. Total quantity made was 548..

I have a 4536 which the bible states the same as this model . Values are a guess. Probably a very scarce gun , few sales reported . Got to wonder about models like these . Why did they make them , but only a small amount . Were they not popular at the time ? How do you put a value on them ?

The 4536 is not the same, it's a traditional DA/SA model with a frame mounted decocker.
The 4556 is DAO, they both are the same size (Compact) as compared to the two larger sizes.

I have one that I sent to Novak's to have tuned up. I placed it for sale on the forum here in 2018 but had no takers so I put it back in the safe. I don't think I would sell it now.

The 4536 is somewhat rare, there is one on the larger auctions asking just north of 1200 no takers. I have one NIB. Another rare model is the 4546 DAO 5" I found one at a reasonable price about 2 years ago. Have not seen one since.

I have one 4556 I bought way back then. I put pachmayer grips
on them and have sever magazines . I'm thinking of selling it since I haven't shot it in probably ten years. Just a collectors piece I guess.

I probably had a half dozen or more back in the day. Glad to see some of them ended up here. The one with the 4586 slide is a real gem. Balances perfectly. It should have been a production model, but I thought of it too late.
