I was asked this question on a classified I have posted and having dug out the answer with some photos, I thought it might be of general interest here.

As many of you know, the TSW (Tactical Smith & Wesson) variants of the standard 3rd Generation Pistols were more robust (thicker metal in selected locations) and featured slightly different barrel and ramp configurations.

They also may have LCI (Loaded Chamber Indicator) Ports on top of slide / top back of barrel and Accessory Rails.
So here is a series of direct comparison photos of a 1996 vintage 5906 vs a 2004 vintage 5906TSW.

Great pictures!

5906 evolved from earlier 9mm pistols and was built to those dimensions.

When the 40s&w cartridge was introduced, those pistols (40XX series) were "beefed-up" to handle the extra power.

When the TSW pistols were designed, S&W took an easy route and built the 9mm (59XXTSW) models on the 40s&w (40XXTSW) platform.
