I dont know how many times I have personally posted this response - but
BEST WAY TO GET MANUFACTURE DATES is to ASK SW at
[email protected] you will need to provide the full S/N and I also would include model - just as a double check.
There are other sources depending on specific model and there is of course Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson
But for Semi-Auto Pistols, particularly those with 3 letter alpha prefixes, the list is incomplete and based largely on observations - and there is significant year overlap and discontinuity of serial numbers.
For example I have 2 pistols with same 3 letter VJP prefix less than 20 numbers apart that SW dates as several years apart in Manufacture.
And there seems to be no obvious rationale for prefix assignment (no doubt there was some method behind the apparent madness, but not apparent to an outsider)
As a general observation, the earlier semi-auto pistols seemed to start the 3 alpha character prefix with Txx prefixes up until 1992-93.
The Vxx seemed to start about 1993 but run all the way thru 2009 with a lot of overlap with Mxx, Kxx, Exx, & Rxx beginning about 1997 and coexisting with a significant number of Txx thru 2002.
The Bxx seems to be about 2004-2008, and the Uxx series seems to cover 2009-2017 including both Houlton, ME and Springfield, MA productions.
