I just put a nice nickel plated model 59 on lay-a-way at a local shop. I want to pick up a couple of extra magazines for it and was wondering if there is compatibility of the model 59 magazines with any of the second or third generation pistols? If they require their own unique magazine, is there a “best place” to acquire additional magazines, or is there a good aftermarket magazine to look for? Any and all comments are appreciated. Thanks!

All of the 59, 659 and 5906 magazines will work in the soon new to you 59.

Mec-Gar’s have worked flawlessly for me in all my 15 rnd 9mm’s including their 17 rnd ones.

The flat base 659 magazines will duplicate the 59’s, the 5906’s will have the plastic base extending out a bit. Midway today has factory 5906 mags available for a reasonable price. At least it’ll get you a few more until you find original factory ones. If originality makes a difference to you.

There is only one exception that I’ve found. I have a very early, very different nickel 59 that will not except either the 15 rnd or 17 rnd Mec-Gar magazines.

Yes, 59, x59, and 59xx magazines will work just fine in any of these pistols. I highly recommend using either genuine S&W or Mec-Gar magazines. Other manufacturer's magazines have a reputation for less than stellar reliability.

A word of unsolicited advice: BUY! If you are fortunate enough to find original mags in good shape at a decent price, they’re like money in the bank (probably better) since they are getting harder to find and are experiencing natural attrition. The most challenging part of my Model 639 project was getting enough original mags to fill my “needs”. Of course Single stackers are worse to find than double stacks, but the principle is the same.

The 59 factory S&W mags are not uncommon at Houston gun shows. They run in the $30-40 range. They also work in the Models 5903, 5904,5905,5906 and 915.

Any mag for any generation will work. That means 59 (Gen 1), 459, etc. (Gen 2), and 5904, etc. (Gen 3). Mags for the economy Models 915 and 910 will also work. If you cannot find OEM factory, buy Mecgar. Do not buy any other brand.
