Hello everyone. It's been a while since I have posted in the forum. I decided I was going to call S&W to pick their brains on these RJF melonite 4566s and man did I get lucky today so I thought I would share the info I received. We all have the background info on these so this is brand new to me info.
Directly from S&W customer service-
The 4566 Melonite serial number started with RJF3094. There were 120 of these made. The rep went through the database for me and gave me a starting serial number then verified there were 120 made in the 4566 platform . He said the RJF prefix continued in to the 9mm so that production number of the 4566 was accurate. He also informed me that the sku# on these pistols was 148670 but the sku was changed somewhere along the line with the #1 replaced with a #6 for whatever reason. I also learned that my specimen (which we will call #10) was sent out as a T&E pistol and returned to the factory. It was gone through and then sold to a store as a "used" pistol. The rep also asked me if there was a letter "U" stamped on the frame under the grip in which I had not ever noticed anywhere until I hung up and had to investigate. Sure as the sky is blue there is a light "U" stamped just above the mag release button. We have all read different production numbers but I was excited to hear it straight from someone who was willing to spend 5 minutes digging for me. He also brought up the KJF prefix saying there were even less of those made. At that point I knew I was talking to the right guy! Hope this might answer some questions we probably all have.

Great information, it sounds like you found someone who really knows their stuff.

Question, did the CS rep give you the total of guns with the RJF prefix, or was it specific to the 4566 Melonite models??

I ask as I have a M4046 that is a Melonite gun, and is also in the RJF prefix.

Maybe I'll play find the rep and see if I can get the same person to provide the great information you received...

Cool....!!

I just edited my post to reflect your exact question haha! The rep did say the RJF prefix did in fact go beyond just the 4566 and in to 9mm and from your verification the 4000 series:) I did not get a total of all models just the 4566. Give them a call!. I'd be really interested on what we come up with as a whole!

I can confirm that “a little after your example”, the sku was still 148670. Also, at least one example of the 4566 Melonite KJFxxxx series had sku 148337.

Now, out to search for a hidden U. 😂

The rep also asked me if there was a letter "U" stamped on the frame under the grip in which I had not ever noticed anywhere until I hung up and had to investigate. Sure as the sky is blue there is a light "U" stamped just above the mag release button.

Was it necessary to remove the grip to see it?

No kidding! That guy was all over it.Wish I would've caught his name but I'm pretty sure he answered with "S&W customer service" and customer service he did provide well! I had told him originally that I don't recall seeing a "U" stamped anywhere but after we hung up and looked that joker was lightly stamped above the mag release right where he said it might be. I have resprung the whole gun, put a couple new levers in, tweaked the drawbar, and resprung both mags it came with after I purchased it and never even noticed the stamping. It's always the little things :)

I will take this opportunity to add to the RJF confusion.
RJF1797 appears to be bone stock 6906 with Night Sights Product Code 108611 Manufacture Date 3/24/1999 per SW
RJF2212 appears to be bone stock 5906 Manufacture Date 1999 per SW
RJF3057 is a 5946 Spec Ord 8775 Product Code 148775 but nothing obviously unique.

And per previous thread, it appears Product Codes 148xxx-150xxx were Contract Order Pistols, frequently Police or other unique configurations.

As to change from 1xxxxx Product Code to 6xxxxx Product Code I have seen 2 6xxxxx Product Codes on End Labels also marked "USED" on SW label. Thinking the 6xxxxx may have revisited the factory for some reason
