Default 4006 40 Novak vs Metal Adjustable sights

When did SW switch from the more familiar Novak sights on the 4006 to the ajustable ones? Or were the concurrent? I'm getting old I and I cant remeber. ha. I was issued a 4006 in 1994 and mine had Novak. Its the one weapon I sadly did not get when we switched to Glock in 2001, I have been looking on gunbroker for one but most seem to have the metal adjustable sights and the Novak seem to command a premium

All made at the same time throughout the period these were manufactured. Different product codes assigned for fixed sight vs. adjustable sight guns. You're right that the fixed sight guns seem to be more desirable and thus are commanding higher prices.

Welcome aboard by the way

Cheers
Bill

Earliest 3rd gen had either skinny fixed sights or adjustable. Novaks replaced the early fixed sights circa 1990 and night sight options followed. By the time the 4006 was introduced there were 3 options fixed Novak, Night Sights, or Adjustable. Some like me prefer the adjustable but most favor the Novaks

The 4006 could be had with either Novaks or adjustable and were offered concurrently. Earlier 3rd gen pistols like the 5906 had a fixed rear sight similar to the ones on 2nd gen pistols before being replaced by the Novak sights, likely around the same time that the 4006 came out (1990). I believe that the adjustable rear sight has always been an option on most 3rd gen pistols.

I reckon the big ears on the adjustable sights are an acquired taste, one I haven't personally acquired. Yet.

Todd

Yeah, looks the 4006 started with the (then) new Novak sights & by-passed the earlier 2nd Gen fixed sights, as seen in this 4006 prototype on the cover of Apr-1990's Shooting Times.

I bought my 4006 as soon as they came out. Only Winchester was making 40 and it was hard to come by. I made cases out of cut down-inside neck reamed 10mm brass........They offered adjustable sights from day one.
I wouldn't trade my adjustable sights for ANY fixed sights which handicap you from dialing a load........NONE NADA....I don't do Kentucky windage.....

Default Sights

My 411, which S&W says was shipped on 02/24, is equipped with the older iron sights. Someone here explained that during that period, part of the cost cutting strategy of the "American Pride Series", the Model 411 and the 915, and then the "Value Line Series", the Model 410 and the 910, involved not paying royalties to Novak.

It is only my opinion that the phrase "American Pride" was intended to convey the reminder that these wonderful guns were not shameful Austrian plastic. :-)

Please correct me anyone.

The adjustable sights throw off the looks of the gun. Aesthetics, style y'know but the Novak sights look good.

Kind regards,
BrianD
