I saw that too. I've got one that our "resident" gunsmith here (BMCM) changed from a DAO to SA/DA and it's slick, he did a fine, fine job, so I'm not really in the market; but it seems a decent deal. They are fine guns.

Does anyone know where these come from? Seems like a lot just popped up on Gunbroker recently too - maybe NYPD or another larger department?

Assuming photos are accurate, they do not have correct markings to be NYPD - no notation about firing with mag removed. Also not Brinks. Would be interesting to know if they have Import marking and where they came from.

They can’t be NYPD guns. Those guns are issued to individual officers and become the personal property of those officers. They haven’t even been an option for going on ten years now. Any still in inventory when they stopped being an option for new hires were sold off as new old stock years ago, so these obviously used guns don’t fit the bill.
I have three 5946 guns. All prior law enforcement. Two NYPD and one a local PD on Long Island, NY. $400 plus tax, shipping, and transfer brings this gun up to nearly $500. Too much for what they are.

Had one several years ago, APD marked. Sold it but shouldn't have. Still have a 6946, so close.

I kinda agree and kinda don’t on the pricing. I’ve been lucky to find all my 3rd gen’s for lower prices (with many of them being more “desirable” models). Obviously we all got used to the days of finding everywhere loaded up with used 3rd Gen’s for sub $300 but I also can’t think of any semi auto of similar quality or features for even $500 out the door.
If you like DAO or TDA steel frame guns you only have a few new options and not even a ton of used options. I could care less about seeing the values of them raise because I don’t plan to sell any of mine but I wouldn’t be surprised to see them continue to appreciate.

I have a well carried late ex-NYPD 5946 from Houlton, ME (late frame with S/N indented right side) that may be my best shooter. Not the prettiest pistol in my collection, but definitely not going away.
If you like DAO, $399 plus tax and shipping is not that bad these days and I believe new SW OE 5906/5946 mags are still available at Midway in the $35 range which makes the 59xx series even with a single mag somewhat more palatable.

If they have import markings, they might be ex RCMP and other Canadian LE guns.

The Sergeant at Arms of the Canadian House of Commons used his RMCP 5946 to take out an active shooter.

I thought that was a 6946. I remember the picture of him holding it. Looked smaller to me. But you’re probably right since they did carry 5946’s.
And I surely never said they were a bad gun. I have three of them, plus a 6946, a 3953, and an early 7 shot 3953 TSW. But $500 all in for a gun of questionable lineage and wear, plus replacing the grips and springs as I do with all guns I buy used, and now we’re talking some money.
But if I saw it in my local shop, I might bite. It’s the shipping and transfer fees that kill it for me.

My own two NYPD 5946’s are in fabulous shape. The first one I’d rate at 95%. Must have belonged to a guy with no street time cause that thing was barely carried. The second one was bought at my local shop for $400. Looked brand new and came with 4 mags and original box with NYPD markings. As I’m doing the paperwork, I found the receipt from the Equipment Section. Total cost was $85 for the night sights. Receipt was from 2001. Officer name on the receipt and tax ID number. He was born in 1932 and judging by his tax ID he came on the job in the later 1950’s. His command was Midtown South Detective Squad. That is a serious high end command. Gotta have friends in high places to work there. He was either a 1st grade detective or a boss. His rank isn’t on the receipt. He must have gotten the gun on his way out the door to retirement and probably moved to Florida and unloaded the gun before he left because this gun has never been carried. Didn’t even look like it was ever shot. I doubt he bothered buying the duty belt and holster. Probably took the free gun on his way out the door after 40 years or so on the Job. $440 for a LNIB 5946 with night sights(dead but I sent them to Trijicon for $57) and 4 factory new mags is a very good deal!

for anyone concerned over just one mag, MecGar makes great mags for the double stack 9s that hold 15 or 17 flush fit, and I think 20 round extended.

Saw the offer. Annoying that guns that probably got turned in with 3-4 magazines each are sold with one, and the spares at $25 each. So a presumed typical complete package is $450 plus taxes, shipping, FFL fee so pushing $525-550.

Plus those guns usually do well with a recoil and mag spring replacement. Add that to the total.

The internet really opens the access to all types of firearms and accessories, but I think the prices are catching-up to that reality as are the tax monkeys. It's not that much of a bargain unless a person finds something others missed, and after these past two decades of internet use, that's becoming less likely by the hour. They are out there, but a lot scarcer than they used to be. Some sales outfits get that and maybe toss-in a sale price or extra mags. But not all. It's a jungle out there!!

Deals can definitely still be found, just a few days before this thread was posted I picked up a 5946 + box and 3 mags for $299 and a 5904 for $285 shipped. Both from out of state from smaller vendors so no tax to pay and one visit/fee to my FFL for both of them. That’s way easier for me than rummaging through pawn shops until I maybe find something and the FFL happens to be a neighbor.

Well, it wouldn't be a "free" gun, unless someone else bought it for him. Personal duty hadnguns are not "issued" in NYPD; they are bought and paid for by the MOS (Member Of Service) and individually owned. When you retire or separate, you paid for it, you own it. And it's generally rare for an MOS to be presented a gun upon retirement (as a gift), unless the retiree was well-liked, high-ranking, or a range instructor, AND there was some a**-kissing that needed to be done for future job prospects for the presentor...

I think any 3rd gen S&W auto in 9mm or .40S&W is going to start moving up in price just like the .45 ACP and 10mm guns. Most of the old department owned guns have been turned in and sold already. I've noticed the 915, 411, 410 and even the 910 moving up in price. Folks just want something different from their polymer framed striker fired guns to play with for change and the 3rd gen guns are works of art from a bygone age. Model 15-4ever is correct about NYPD guns. It's not issued, you buy from and approved list of pistols from an approved retailer, if I'm not mistaken. The thing that changed in New York is that even retired LE must procure a New York State pistol permit before they retire or loose the gun. Newark PD NJ is the agency my 3953 came from. I missed out on the California CHP 4006 guns. That would be a hobby unto itself, just collecting department marked guns! My department was switching from Gen 3 Glocks to Gen 4. I actually had the opportunity to purchase a duty gun from the outfit that handled the contract. Unfortunately they wanted way too much for the gun and wouldn't guarentee I would get my gun.

That’s been wrong since 1995. We used to pay for our own guns and I paid for mine, but then some grant was passed and we only had to pay for the night sights. Those who paid for their guns before the grant were reimbursed. Lots of guys who still had their revolver at retirement would take the free gun and then sell it after they retired. The gun was yours to do with as you pleased. Keep it, gift it, or sell it. Your choice. When the cops paid for their guns, the Glock was chosen more because it was cheaper than the 5946 or SIG 226, but once they became free that evened out a bit.

That clarifies a lot of *my* confusion over the information. Some posts, mostly yours, had this information, but other times I'd see that NYPD officers paid for their own guns.
So, I'll just add to the confusion and ask if that also applied to off duty weapons?

No. Off duty weapons are strictly optional and must be paid for by Officer. Night sights in those are not mandatory. My duty gun did not have night sights since I paid for it. When I got reimbursed we weren’t required to add the night sights.

I got a NYPD 5946 from a member here(ACed) and I really like it.
IMHO the DAO pistols shoot better with the curved grips, the DA/SA shoot better with the flat grips.
YMMV.
