5946

NYPD

I was part of the NYPD's "experiment" when they were considering switching to 9mm's from the 38. 2 of us in each precinct were given the 9's to carry on duty, I picked the SW5946.
It's a heavy weapon to carry and it came DAO, no safety. The powers to be didn't want us thinking about the safety, just draw and fire like our old 38's.
The weapon came with the "NY trigger". 12lb pull which was about what the pull was on our 38's. It still takes some getting used to.

Two of the guys in my precinct were part of the experimental phase and they both had Ruger P89 pistols. That was really early because the Ruger never made the cut when the switch to 9MM was made. They continued to carry them, though.

A bunch of online vendors have had these pistols for sale recently. Prices range from reasonable for a gun you can't touch to 'don't make me smile'.

Got a 5946 from Aim Surplus for $299; could not pass it for that price. Have a complete spare 5906 and spare parts to have Guzzi convert it over to a DA/SA like my 5946 TSW, but to be honest the trigger pull on this one is not bad

For quite a while my 'gunshop carry gun" was an NYPD 5946 DAO. Nice gun. Took abuse like a Cuban welterweight. Eventually went to my tried and true Colt Government Model .45, not because I didn't like the Smith but because I wasn't a huge fan of 9mm.

Best,

Pull the gun out and go over it VERY carefully and see if there are any unidentified or weird stand alone characters stamped on it.

The pilot guns (pilot program for automatics) had Department manufacturers codes on them.

I have one of the "Gucci Guns", the Department SIG P226 that was a Pilot Gun. There is a P stamped on the gun indicating it was part of the Pilot Program. The P doesn't actually stand for Pilot Program; it's the Department code letter for SIG.

As an example, L is the Department code for Rugers and B is the Department code for Winchesters, etc.

I used to have a Pilot Program Glock 19 and it had a Q electric pencilled into the frame; Q being the Department code for Glock.

Take a look and let me know what you find.

I knew a lot of guys who volunteered for the Pilot Program because the gun was free AND yopu got free new leather gear.

Best,

Mine has SW0151 lazered onto the frame. I was part of the pilot program in 1993. The weapon and leather gear was issued to me.
