PC Shorty 9
One pro and one con of retirement. 1. I now have time to search gun shops near and far with in the state. 2. I'm on a fixed income so disposable income is less available. Fortunately, yesterday I was able to purchase this beauty. No box, papers, tools, or spare magazines. If anyone knows what type of box this may have shipped in, I'd like to hear from you.

Neat pickup for you!
As I have never owned one of these, I cannot be certain... but I believe these pistols originally shipped in what might be argued the "least desirable" of all the original true PC boxes, and that would be the low-buck black plastic Doskocil brand case.
Of course... my absolute favorite of all PC guns ever made also shipped in that same cheesy box. (845 Limited)

Hey nice little 9mm.
Mine came in a blue plastic PC marked box. The label reads 5906 but I think that changed. I asked Earl if he knew anything about this but he didn’t.
**** Edit to add the LH letter ****

I know what you mean by less available disposable income. I haven't made a purchase since the end of July! I'm hoping that changes this week with I gun I have my eye on.
Nice pick up for you!

My Shorty 40 came in the same blue PC marked box but was missing its label.
However the box label of Shorty 40s listed the Model No. as 4006.
I think their logic was because the 5906 & 4006 were the parent pistols?

Congratulations Dino44! I'm hoping to join the retirement club later this year, I expect this will slow down my collecting considerably as well! Would you mind sharing what this beauty cost you?
Thanks Trey.

One of the reasons I still work part time is so I have extra income to support my 3rd Gen addiction and other hobbies.
That's a nice firearm. I especially like the left side only safety/decocker. My regular carry pre rail 3913TSW and CS9S have been converted to that configuration.
Now of course, I'll have to keep my eyes out for a PC Shorty 9 to add to the collection.

I’ve seen shorty nines come with black doskocil cases and blue textured cases. I’ve even seen the shorty 9 with adjustable sights come with a red doskocil case.

I am racking my brain and cannot recall any S&W Performance Center semiautomatic in any form of a red box. Can you show me a link or direct me to anything that tells me more?

I remember seeing one not that long ago. Probably on GB?
The red PC case was with an adjustable rear sight Shorty 9. I think it was a MKIII which I’d never heard of before. The adjustable sight and red box really stood out to me. I had wondered if the red box actually came with it originally.
Can’t find it now though.

Here’s a screen shot of an old listing. Unfortunately the end label was not pictured.

My Recon 9 came in an aluminum PC case. Not sure what the difference between the Recon 9 and the Shorty 9 is.

Hahaha, this blows my mind. On one hand, I can confirm I am not going crazy and my memory is suspect.
On the other hand… I’ve been bat guano crazy about S&W Performance Center semiautomatic pistols for nearly a decade, and not only have I never (ever ever ever) seen one of these, I swear this is the first that I can recall ever having heard of it.

9 Recon’s, (40’s and 45’s,) were RSR Distributers exclusives and Shorty 9’s, (40’s and 45’s,) were Lew Horton exclusives. The RSR ones originally came in metal PC badged cases and the Lew Horton’s came in PC marked plastic cases.
The 9 Recon was advertised as “an improved” Shorty and the Shorty 9 was advertised as “the most accurate out of the box 9mm ever made.”
The 9 Recon’s are different from the Shorty 9’s in a few ways.
The 9 Recon has front cocking serrations, the Billboard, different angled dust cover, were decock only and have a longer grip tang.
The 9 Recon was made after the Shorty 9. There were 611 total Shorty 9’s made and 419 total 9 Recons made.

Some very interesting information in this thread!
I purchased my shorty 9 from a friend years ago but it didn't come with the box or docs.
A few things from memory, there was a thread a few years ago that outlined precautions on the proper procedure of removing and installing the slides with the Briley barrel bushing, apparently if done wrong or carelessly it can damage the barrel and bushing and good luck having that repaired as each slide/barrel assembly is hand lapped n fit to each frame and serial numbered to that frame.
The two magazines that came with the PC9 are interchangeable with the 5906 series but they had the PC emblem on the slide body, ( my PC shorty 40 magazines are also PC marked).
On a side note those blue plastic PC boxes have been out of production for some time now but SW had a newer style grey PC plastic case you could buy for around $20 a couple years ago new as a replacement,
while they aren't period correct they are a better box than the original and are a factory SW product and PC marked.
I didn't realize there were two different serial prefix, will have to dig mine out and check its serial, IIRC it is PCV like the Op's.

That's crazy cheap for a PC9, perhaps half price.

Congratulations and thanks, I'd say you did extremely well on that one! I've got one inbound, but it cost me closer to $1200. I passed on a pristine example about 6 months ago, it sold for around $2500 but was LNIB with all the extras. With these scarce PC models becoming harder to find, the value of the deal is pretty much set by what the buyer is willing to give for it.

I had a friend that used to say, "sometimes you're the dog, and sometimes you're the tree" The same day in the same shop I scored a 63-3 2'' with box and all the goodies. That one wasn't cheap $1500. I still felt like the dog, for even coming across one of those, coupled with the shorty 9.

10 years ago or so, someone here brought up a great point. If you get a really high end one and you paid very little for it, then the “savings” should be applied to the something you want that costs more than you wanted to pay.
That makes sense to me, (but of course it would.) I’ve followed that advice more than once.
