Don't own a 1911 but I think I probably should. LGS has an earlier blued version (SN JRE 95XX). Not a so-called "Billboard" model but with the smaller cartouche. It appears to be in VG conditon if not near NIB, though I've yet to handle it. No forward serations, just a basic 1911 with the typical improvements: beavertail, extended grip and thumb safeties, etc. I understand its and external extractor and believe it has the firing pin safety. For $600, any thoughts on such a gun as a starter, probably only 1911?

Condition and your geographic location would determine a reasonable price. It is a blued, carbon steel M1911 clone. How is the blued finish? Any rust freckles, spots or pitting? How is the trigger and barrel lock up? Does it appear to have been used little or shot a lot? Also, if you live in a gun unfriendly area, expect to pay more.

Keep in mind that Tisas makes really nice M1911 clones and a brand new Tisas clone tends to run from $400 to $800, depending upon the model and features, these days.

Walk into the shop and lay five $100 bills on the counter .
Cash money can get you a discount ... I gave them .
Every shooter should have a good 1911 in 45 acp ...
mine is on the desk next to me as I type this .
Easy to reload ammo for , accurate and fun !
The S&W 1911 is a good one and will always be more desirable than the "less expensive" brand .

Do some wheelin & Dealin and see what price you can get ...
Go For It !

JRE prefixes were a premium production run, I would buy it over a lesser brand name. Contingent on condition of course.

That is a good handgun. I have two nice full size US brand name 45 ACP 1911's and like them, but I mostly shoot my ATI commander 9mm. You should get what you want, but the Tisas, RIA/ATI and other 1911 manufacturer's are good too for a fraction of the price. My gunsmith was impressed with my ATI and bought one after he deep cleaned mine.

There's about a 1000 different ways you can start out with 1911s, but as noted above Tisas makes a really good 1911 at a bargain price. I'm not a fan of external extractors, or firing pin safeties on 1911s; I prefer the original design, though I have had some '80 series' guns that worked fine. I've never owned an S&W 1911, but have had many others by Colt, Springfield, Kimber, Ruger and now Tisas.

PSA is blowing out some Tisas Duty Enhanced guns at $449... I don't think you can get more for your 1911 money than one of these. Forged slide/frame, and no MIM parts. I have one of these and they are very nice guns. It's very tempting to buy another at that price!

Just a moment...

I own a couple of S&W 1911s including an early billboard model and I would put them up against any other maker at the same price range as you get much more gun and fewer to no problems with the external extractor compared to an internal one. I would buy that gun in a heartbeat if it was in decent shape, around me used ones start at 750 and up.
