Saw one today in a local shop. Decent shape. Some handling marks. One magazine. Dead Trijicon night sights. Square trigger guard which I generally don’t like. $299.

No experience with these. I see on the slide it read that the parts for this gun are not interchangeable with the other 3rd Gen guns. Does it take standard 5906 mags?

No reason at all to get it other than I’ve never owned a decocker model. It seems like it was kind of added on as an afterthought.

But when I own out of production guns I like having some parts on hand. I’d have to replace the recoil and firing pin spring at the least. The magazine spring too.

What’s the overall consensus on these? Interesting gun for the collection, but maybe $300 is spent better elsewhere?

I would spend $300 for it. Make sure it has the two punch marks under the decock lever indicating recall service. Have Trijicon re-lamp the sights and sell it for a profit if you end up not liking it.

Check on Midways site . I bought the decocker and parts for my 1076 from them . Wasn't very expensive and it's good to have a part like that "Just In Case."

I looked at the stamped wording on a 5926 for sale. It doesn't exactly say that no other 59xx parts will work. I suspect, never having held one, that the parts that are unique are related to the frame mounted decocker.

Numrich has the sideplate in stock, and the image shows a unique part, as it does for the drawbar. If you are interested, you can go to their site and click on each item. For example, the firing pin is the same for all 9mm 3rd Gens from the CS9 up to the 59xx guns.

Yes, magazines are the same for all 59xx guns. I would expect recoil and firing pin springs to be the same. Grips, obviously not.

Grab at $300. Prolly never need spare parts but no hurt hunting. Mags are the same. Try it, you'll like it!

For that price it would be a buy it right now.

When the Frame Mounted Decocker and DAO variants were introduced, the early xx24, xx26, xx43, xx44, xx46 were frequently marked with model number on right of slide and left marked "...Parts Must Agree...".

This was true for both the early 5926 with D shaped trigger guard and some of the later 5926 with rounded trigger guard.

Later pistols were not so marked externally, but often slides were marked inside with model number.

I had assumed the slide and its subcomponents, obviously the safety parts, frame and grip parts, and possibly some firing components were potentially unique, but barrel, sights, recoil guide rod and springs are probably the same.

Magazines do interchange. And as pointed out previously, assuming the recall was addressed, you will probably never need anything but springs and maybe grips.

Factory grips are a potential wear / abuse item and are impossible to find, but I believe there are aftermarket grips for 5926 (and 4026?) but not other xx26, xx76 pistols.

Others will point out that the safety mechanism is potentially more fragile than conventional 3rd gen safeties so if you stumble across safety component parts at a reasonable price, I would grab them - but strongly suggest you dont take that area apart unless absolutely necessary - thats reported to be a real challenge to correctly reassemble.

For $300 its a steal if grips are in good condition. As to recall, SW may still do the recall, but then again maybe not. Still for $400+ it would be in my safe if in good condition.

I would be all over that like white on rice. I saw one a few years back and they wanted like $525, that was more than I was willing to spend back then. $300 is a steal. I sent in my brother's 1076 to S&W maybe 3-4 years ago and they did the recall upgrade on the decocker. They didn't mark it though for some reason, but said they did do the upgrade.

A Hogue for the 5906 can be fitted with an xacto knife and dremel. I have one on my 1076 I fitted that way.

I had one that I bought cheap a while back that was Israeli Police Surplus. The gun was in good condition and was serviced at some point during the upgrade. It had the two dots.

In the end, I got rid of it because the decocker just doesn't do it for me. The gun's controls are very cluttered since the decocker lever was right next to the slide catch/release lever.

I really don't miss the gun at all. It was ho-hum.

I've had a 5926 for several years now. It is strictly a range gun as its weight makes it a difficult carry weapon. It shoots great, recoil is manageable due to an all steel frame. It is similar to the 5906 except is has a decocker and a bobbed hammer. They are great guns..

Smith still does the recall.

I have only owned traditional DA/SA Smith and Wesson autos (currently a 4516 and a 4013 TSW. Used to have a 669-unfortunately sold it).

I would love to find just about any DAO model and one with the SIG like decocker someday.

I went back today to see if it was still there and it was. Place was a lot less busy so I had some time to really look at it. The gun has the two dots indicating it went through the recall. The slide had a little more wear than I noticed last week. I am a diehard 3rd fan and have had several dozen. I have 8 or 9 now. But I passed on this one.

First of all. I hate the square trigger guard. Just throws the whole look of the gun off for me.

The decocker really looks like an afterthought. It is so jammed up next to the slide stop that using the slide stop was annoying.

There was an issue with either the mag or the slide. I met some resistance seating the magazine and had to slap it in. Should not have to do that on an empty gun. Once it was in I tugged on it and it was secure, but racking the slide to the rear would not lock the slide open the first few times I tried it. I had to remove the magazine several times and try it again before it worked. This was a factory 15 round magazine.

I'd have to spend $100 shipping it to Trijicon to re-lamp the sights, plus replace the springs.

It just wasn't calling out to me. I went there intending to buy but when I looked it over it just wasn't doing anything for me. My Spidey Senses were tingling.
