I am a LH shooter and I have a 1006. I took off the grips and looked to see if the magazine release is reversable. The magazine catch has "R" on it, I just wondered if they make (or made) a left side mag release for the 1006 and where I can get one if they did. Can anyone help?

you are going to be out of luck.

only dbl stack frames (not sure if all of them) had the provision in the frame to swap the mag release assembly.

EDITED,

I just looked at a pic of a 1006 with adjustable sights and it appears that you can swap the assembly around.

take a pic of your ejection side and post to confirm.

Wrong and wrong.

They did make the separate part for the LH release for the 4506/1006/etc. I got one from a kind soul on the board for my 1076 (the RH part was not reversible). You can get one from S&W if you cannot find one through Brownell's. I'm sorry, but I don't have access to a part number here, but I'm sure the nice folks at S&W can help you out.

Erich,

you are saying the assembly cannot be flipped if it has the detent hole on the ejection side?

you know what, DOH! it would put the mag catch on the wrong side.

Never mind, I was wrong!

Don't the LH mag catches require the mags that are cut out on both sides?

I don't think that you'll have any problem. I'm pretty sure that the 1006 is the same frame as my 1026 and S&W had plenty of LH mag releases available (when I called the guy said they had something like 160 in inventory). Here are a couple pix done for a different reason that show the LH release:

http://smith-wessonforum.com/eve/for...4/m/9991097343

You do need a LH mag release (and it will have an "L" on it) as the mag engagement tab is chamfered on the bottom side for mag insertion. You also do need mags with slots on both sides (all the 10MM mags that I've seen have that, but there may be some without).

According to my invoice from S&W the part you need is Product Code 201570000.

If you call don't let anyone tell you that you can just reverse the release. One guy did that with me when it was obvious (to me) it wouldn't work. I had to call back to get another rep that would actually look the part up for me and take the order.

It's a pretty simple installation with a very thin punch or a stiff, blunt needle (paperclip even). If it's not obvious to you, send me an email and I'll offer directions.

FWIW, in the double-column magazine TSW pistols, with the appropriately machined frames, you can 'flip' the mag catch assemblies (the frames have to have the hole for the mag catch plunger pin machined on the opposite side).

In the single column .45 TSW frames the RH mag catch cannot be flipped and used, but a LH part is required. This has sometimes confused even some folks who answered phones at S&W, too.

Yes, if you don't have magazines with ambi notches cut in them they may not be likely to remain in the gun very long.

That's the part number for the M1006 pistol in the current parts list on the website, too. 201570000 $13.29 O MAGAZINE CATCH (LH) (The "O" just means Optional, BTW, like the curved grip was optional on the 1006 pistols ... Part No# 203590000 $18.82 O GRIP, CURVED.)

Thanks for the info gentlemen! I will call S&W tomorrow and order the part. I have four mags for the 1006 and all of them have the cut outs on both sides of the pistol.

Here is a picture of my setup. I mostly use it as a backup when deer and hog hunting.
