Are recoil buffer's a functional addition to your 1911 or snake oil?
Pro's & Con's? Thanks

A solution looking for a problem. Recoil shield on the recoil spring guide takes the brunt of the stress. Maintain your recoil spring and you're good to go.

Carry gun, they are a no-no, Target gun ,use em if you want.

This is the general opinion.

Personally, Theres one in my commander(that I carry) it been there since I got the gun and I've never had a problem with it through 1000s of rounds. My target gun does'nt have one in(I built the gun and just never put one in).

Take it how you want it, I feel its more personal preferance than anything. BUT, one more thing to watch in a carry piece.

there are marks in my target gun where the slide stops on the frame.

RECOIL BUFFERS ARE A NO NO. TO REGULATE RECOIL YOU SHOULD CHANGE THE RECOIL SPRING WEIGHT. JP

They can also add just enough length to the recoil spring to make most guns so that you can't slingshot the slide and will have to use the slide release instead.
Use them in target guns if you wish but I'd not use them in anything else.

As Joni said, some guns are not made with enough room to accomodate buffers. Worst case, they will cause the spring to go solid in recoil, causing damage.

I have one range 1911 set up with a buffer, and it works well.

However, My Paraord TAC Five is one that you cannot even put one in for practice without binding the gun.

By the way, the once-poopular practice of putting in a very light recoil spring to "reduce recoil" is thoroughly discredited; it batters the gun.

I had nothing but trouble with 1911s with the Wilson Shok-Buffs..
I have a Heit Red Buff in My Beretta92FS & it's been 100% with over 20,000 rounds so far!!
Thought about picking up a Buffer Technology buffer for My 3913 to give a try
Anyone had any experiences with the ones in the 3rd generation S&W Autos?
Great Thread!!

I have a Buffer Tech buffer in my 4006. Works well. No problems so far. H&K is the only major gun company that I know of that has factory designed recoil buffers in their guns.

I TIRED USING BUFFERS IN BOTH 1911 AND THE PPC 9'S . FROM THE RANSOM REST I FOUND THAT THEY AFFECTED THE ACCURACY AT 50YDS. THE BEST BET IS A RECOIL SPRING PACK FROM WOLF GUNSPRINGS. USE THE STRONGEST SPRING THAT ALLOWS THE SLIDE TO LOCK TO THE REAR EVERY TIME. JP
