Does anyone know about this 5946 its different than the standard 5946 that it is black melonite, has a rail of a TSW series, and has a RCMP logo on it..

My research has found that in 2008 that S&W had RCMP police evualate some of these models as a replacement to the standard 5946..A Candian LE worte this about it in early 2008..The CHP is probaly (Canadian Highway patrol)as the person who wrote below is a Otawwa Police Officer..

"There is a new 5946 out that we tested against the Sig for ERT. It was made for the CHP. It comes black from the factory, has an integral rail, and has a slightly lower trigger pull."

So basically a TSW series gun (at least the frame).. Its a very interesting piece to say the least but would have liked to see one in Stainless..

So are these going to be standard production model sooner or later?

I did a search and found nothing else.I will call S&W and find out more.

I'll take it! My Mother-in-law is Canadian so I find this pistol a very interesting variation. Make sure you let us know as you find out more information. Thanks for sharing.

CHP would be the California Highway Patrol as there is NO such thing as the Canadian Highway Patrol. Each Province is respondsible for administering there own traffic laws, in most provinces the RCMP is contracted to do so.

That is not an integral rail. It is the riveted rail found on the standard TSW series. Unfortunately, it is proprietary and doesn't get much aftermarket support. The cross slot is too far rearward to accept accessories with a Picatinny 1913 format.

S&W does offer an integral (forged) rail on the 4566 and 4006 frames, as requested by a couple of California LE departments. They can be found in the factory LE catalog.

I don't believe any TSW style pistols will become standard production again. Lack of interest in the retail sector.

So on the 4006 are the forged in rails TSW series or just marked 4006? I would like to find one of those also but will be doing through having it shipped to a FFL and wont be able to actually see the gun inperson to see if its riveted or not..

Also when you say CHP is Califonira highway patrol, didnt they switch from the 4006 a few years back and went to the M&P a few years back? I never heard they were even considering a 9mm. From the limited info i gathered it the gun inquestion was sent to the RCMP for evulation in 2008.

thanks for the other info though.

The Mounted Police have had 5946s for quite a while. And for some ERT sections, they had the guns blackened with some kind of teflon type finish. So they wouldn't have had these as evaluation in 2008. It was done to death by then.

The pictures you posted have me asking a couple of questions and thinking they are actually 2 different guns. The bottom one looks like someone's gun personally owned in Canada with an aftermarket, ie. BarSto, barrel installed to meet the latest/greatest regulations requiring all new imports/registered guns to have a barrel more than 105mm in length.

I've seen a couple personally owned guns, that the owners had the same Mounted Police logo engraved that looked very similar to that one. The RCMP guns also had the serial numbers on all 3 components.

And just to echo, there is no Canadian Highway Patrol.

I am aware of that top gun and you are right these photos show two different guns, but I was told by the shop selling the top one that it does have the rcmp logo on the right side of the slide.

As it was for sale in the U.S. I would think it more likely to be an overrun than a homemade job, but I have never seen the logo.

Goodoleboy,

Go to page 25 of the following link. You will see the difference between the forged and riveted rails.

Why would a pistol submitted to the California Highway Patrol have the RCMP logo on it? Does not make much sense, does it?

My reference was in regards to the below quote and not specifically about the pistol in the pictures.

My research has found that in 2008 that S&W had RCMP police evualate some of these models as a replacement to the standard 5946..A Candian LE worte this about it in early 2008..The CHP is probaly (Canadian Highway patrol)as the person who wrote below is a Otawwa Police Officer..

Another point is if the author of the quote is a Ottawa Police Officer, he is with a municipal force and Ottawa issues Glock 22. We however do have a large concentration of RCMP here in Ottawa though.

The CHP is STILL carring 4006's, they're just the TSW models. They switched to the TSW in 2008 I think.

KOLDT is correct... the photos in the OP are of two different guns. I know this because the bottom pic is a picture I took a few years ago of my gun. Not sure but I'm guessing the pic above was "borrowed" from a post I made years ago on the Canadian GunNutz website.

The gun was purchased by me from a US distributor who listed it as an "over-run" of a version that S&W submitted to RCMP for purchase/evaluation. My understanding was that several guns from the "run" had never shipped to RCMP and that S&W sold them off to the US dealer I purchased mine from. At the time I tried to buy more but was told this was all they had... not sure if/or how many more there had been.

At the time I confirmed their existence and validity with friends of mine who worked at the RCMP Armoury at DEPOT Division as well as a member posted at the Ottawa RCMP Firearms section.

The gun came from S&W as you see it, with the exception of the barrel. The picture I took showed the gun with an installed BarSto match grade barrel. That 106mm barrel had to be installed in order to legally import the gun into Canada as a private firearm (Canadian law makes pistols with a barrel length of 105mm or less Prohibited for individual/private importation, since @ 1995). The gun did originally come with a standard 4" 9mm barrel which I still have down in the US.

The box does not say anything about RCMP but the gun was engraved with the RCMP logo and I was told this was done from the factory by S&W, as was the Black Melonite finish. Product code was marked as 608270 and serial number series was BAY####.

The gun was received in the US in what appeared to be BNIB condition, though the box label had "used" typed on it. All paperwork was new and untouched (which I still have) and the gun was wrapped and appeared unfired and unmarked.

We installed the 106mm barrel and test fired the gun as part of the fitting process... other than that the gun still sits in my safe as a collector's piece. To my knowledge it is the only privately owned one of it's kind in Canada. There are quite a few regular S&W5946 Stainless models here in Canada but I've never seen or heard of another one of these "3rd Gen", Black, railed and logo'd guns privately owned and registered in this country.

RCMP own the rights to the logo, but S&W is licensed to apply it, making these logo'd guns rather unique... especially one in private hands. Years ago the RCMP used to sell off some of their used guns, allowing private citizens to sometimes acquire RCMP horse logo'd firearms for personal ownership. But a few years back the Federal Government passed legislation which stopped that process. It is no longer legal for any "Department/Agency" owned firearms to be sold/transferred to private ownership. They can trade or sell them to other police forces, they can destroy them, but they can no longer be sold for private ownership.
