I just had to check a local's website looking for revolvers and in the list for Smith and Wesson it showed a 5946 with rail, hmmm? I called and asked them to check the serial number - BDX 1830 - I already have BDX 1826.

It is used and is stamped as such but really the only marks I can find are on both sides of the firing pin retainer (perhaps from a snap on a duty holster - just speculating this could have been a demo a dept. T&E'ed and they had both righties and lefties try it), a small mark on the back of the slide and a small mark on the right of the slide below and just a bit behind the ejection port.

It came in a plain cardboard box (without a magazine!) with end label and has an product # of 650248. Mine was NIB and came in the factory blue case with product # 150248 just for reference. Perhaps interesting to some of you here, the spent casing was recovered on 03-06-12.

Anyway, on to the pics:

Those pistols are pretty interesting. I didn't know that S&W still makes steel semi's. They are probably super special order, right? And not available to the general public, unfortunately.

It's very interesting that this was made so recently. Or at least test fired so recently. It's also a bit encouraging that this was released to the commercial market after it was tested.

I just wish they'd do that more, although I'm sure my wife and bank account are happy they don't. ;)

Here's an excerpt from Roy's letter on mine:

So production was likely some time ago as the night sights on the two in the OP are either 05 and 06 or both 06.

I've posted this before but prior to sending the letter I just called and asked the rep how many were made - he stated they can't give out numbers but stated production #'s were in the single digits.

Another member believed there to be 4 or 5 that existed with the 150248 product code based on research he'd done. Perhaps he'll come along and share. There's another fellow too who might pop in and share the information HE has.

The letter is very interesting. I know that we've beaten this topic to death, but I really do wish that S&W could find a way to make these economically viable again.

I have several 3rd generations and they are my favorite firearms. I even like them more than my Model 10s. But don't tell the revolver guys! ;)

What a find, thanks for the pics and info. Would love to see a letter on your 5946 Scott. Best of luck.

First off, I want.

Second, my 3914 also has a BDX serial number prefix. My gun was made in very early 2007. It's a DAO variant specific to my department so I had to special order it, which was in January of 2007. Hope that helps date it.

Beautiful pistols, sir!

I can't believe S&W couldn't turn a profit selling 3rd Gens if the price was competitive with Sig.

I still believe they could make the 3rd gennies again and at a reasonable cost.

I just want a 4506 with an integrated rail and the TSW features.

Have pics of this one been shared? Sounds yummy.

Thanks for the kind words gentlemen.

Neat.......

Here's the thread I posted back in 2009 when I got mine.....

http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-...2-m5946-melonite-pc-150248-one-four-made.html

I distinctly remember the nice CS person saying the number 4, however it's fuzzy now as to 4 total or 4 more out there besides mine....

With you letter saying 5, then we need to have Chris post a pic of his and we'll have 80% of the production of these in this thread, has the other one surfaced?

I'm wondering if the product code, starting with 6 indicates a factory "used" or "reconditioned" gun? Since all the other numbers are the same I'm guessing that's the case.

Neat that you have 40% of the total production, sounds better than qty 2.

:)

Actually I just got off the phone with CS and that's what the "6" indicates.

I was then transferred to someone "who knew more about these" and he was pretty dry. He indicated that this one was made in 2006 and believe he said it was returned to S&W in 2011 then resold to Lew Horton as a used firearm. I tried to get some idea on how many 650248s were out there realizing he couldn't give specific #s but he just said that there were thousands of 5946s. I indicated I was aware of that however I explained that the Melonite integrally-railed ones weren't a dime a dozen and also explained my letter indicating 5 being shipped for special finish, etc.

He then was going to transfer me to Mr. Jinks to which I responded "Oh no, don't bother Mr. Jinks with this. If I'm going to deal with him I should just cough up the $50 again."

It's odd how some reps can give quite detailed info and others sound like they'd rather be at the dentist's than assisting a person.

I'm curious about the serial # gap as you know all 4 known serial #s. I sure wish Mr. Jinks could have included serial # range in my letter - I'd asked but it wasn't provided. Could that mean that when you were told 4 total (and the letter says 5) is that shipped out of the vault or produced? Perhaps there's a couple still lingering in there.

I would love to buy a DAO 3914. Sadly, MA law wouldn't allow a dealer to transfer it to me because it's not one "the list". I've thought about contacting S&W to price converting my 3914NL to DAO, but haven't done it yet.

I thought we had accounted for five of them but now can't find where the fifth one was posted.

I'm not really a stainless person but at least it's blue (or black). :)
