Here are 2 .45 prototypes I've recently added to the collection
Top is a 4506. Not a typo :) . Built for an LAPD officer and used, as you can see
Then is the 4566 two tone CQB proto. Thanks to a forum member.

HOWDY GRINDER!!!!

is that PC 4506 an auto decocker? its missing the red paint like the CQB Proto.

I recall reading YEARSS ago that some custom 4506s were made for a police shooting match and were transferred through the LAPD store.

maybe that was one? it was in a gun magazine from way back. I could have swore it was a two gun set in the article. No way I can recall what mag.

cool piece.

Great finds Grinder. I don't know how you find all those great PC guns!

CQB,
Both have standard safeties.
I would love to find some of those old articles
It looks almost as used as your duty CQB :)

Grinder,

Looks my old 4566 found a good home, fits right in.

orangehole,

I don't know about the rest of his PCs, but I contacted him to see if he wanted the 4566 proto above because I've been reading his posts for a while now, and he consistanly is helpful and nice to people here.

I figured that was who got to them.
Sorry I messed up on my offer Catshooter if you are he.
Nice find Grinder. I was a little too slow on the trigger for the 4506.
Now I need to find a nice 845 to comfort myself :)
Please do let us know how they shoot.

Grinder, since the 4506 appears to have been unholstered :P

tell us how it shoots?

I am assuming fitted slide to frame, match barrel, spherical bushing and action job?

Yes, it looks like mine!

Re-finishing

Grinder, Smith and Wesson does an excellent job on re-finishing work. You could probably send that 4506 back for re-finishing (or at least send the slide)

I just had my black Shorty 40 done. They did an excellent job but they didn't do the slide stop, trigger, hammer and safety so I am having those parts coated in black teflon.

When it is done, I will post pics.

MartialComp,

can they redo the laser etching that will be removed with abrasive blasting to prepare the slide for the new finish?

just wondering if they are still able to create something they did years ago.

my slide, small parts will need re blacking, re-apply lettering and re anodized frame. never got it done because I keep buying guns.

thanks in advance

I just saw my pistol yesterday.

I can still see the Shorty 40 MK3 writing on the slide however it does look very faded.

My take is that they did not re-do the laser writing. However, I won't be completely sure until I get the firearm back again. It could be that they used a lighter color to re-do it.

For me, this was a major issue...one I thought about the entire time the firearm was back with Smith and Wesson. I was willing to accept it in any form because the finish was in bad shape so I resolved myself to think it would be gone. It was nice to still see a faded version of it when I saw the pistol yesterday. It could be that they dipped the slide without trying to remove the writing. That might be why I still see a faded version.

Again, I will post pictures after the black parts are teflon coated. Should take about 2 weeks or so.

Forgot to mention...

They re-do the anodizing on the aluminum frames as well. In fact, my frame looks brand new.

I really do believe that the anodizing provides additional protection by adding surface hardness and preventing corrosion.

I also need to mention that the PC is now in the regular building so it would be easy to ask them to scrutinize your pistol.

Have them check the springs and parts, check the barrel to bushing fit, frame to slide fit, etc.

I only spent a few minutes looking at mine yesterday. My impression is that my pistol was checked over by the PC. I am not completely sure but it looks like it.

The other thing that surprised me is that the frame to slide fit seems much tighter than it was before I sent it back to S&W.

SW CQB - Yes they can. One of the prototype guns in my collection is a 3913TSW. It started life as a standard 3913TSW rail version. As S&W was preparing to bid for an overseas police contract, it was removed from inventory and completely Melonited black. The laser etching was then reapplied. It became their sample for the contract. Not only can they do it, but it comes out looking every bit as perfect as the first time.

Thanks MC and Ted for the info.

I am going to buy two more "pieces" and then focus on a re-finish for my CQB.

I'm going to leave it alone.

CQB= a total PC product- hand built and fit, bushing, etc.
I added another pic- it actually stopped raining

furyalecto= the 4566 was Catshooters. The 4506 was the piece you had in mind, along with this 4566TSW modified by the PC .

Martialcomp= interested in seeing pics of your refinish

Pic of the PC modified 4566TSW NS that was with the 4506 deal

Grinder, is this guy black magic or melonite on the slide? I see no underlying laser etching on the slide, so they had to at least alum oxide to prep to the slide for the coating.

I have often thought of melonite with factory laser etching for my CQB refinish.

thanks in advance

I don't mean to keep beating the horse, but please let us know how it shoots (if you are planning to do so someday.) I am especially curious if the trigger feels as good in double action as it does in single.

Does it have a magazine safety? I didn't think it would, but I never got an answer to that question.

I am glad that you got it & are gracious enough to share with us.

Thanks for the clarification. The first thing that goes is the memory & I can't remember the next...
