I was just thinking as I was typing up this post that I think it would make things a little easier if S&W had a second, parallel model numbering system for their pistols and revolvers.

Maybe something that added a frame-size to the model number (K10 = Model 10, N27 = Model 27, J640 = Model 640, etc.), or maybe a string of characters denoting the major features, especially for the J-frames (J640-CHSFSC = Model 640, Concealed Hammer, Stainless Frame, Stainless Cylinder; J337-PHAFBC = Model 337, sPur Hammer, Alloy Frame, Blued Cylinder). Kinda like the product code, but not so detailed as to denote whether it shipped with a target hammer vs. semi-target hammer, or whatever.

Hmm...now that I think about it, that would probably be just as complicated.

In the Smith & Wesson website, I'm lost when it comes to the newer models. I can't tell, in the Classic section, what's a K-frame and what's an L-frame. Both are listed under the Medium Frame section.
And unless you know which frame size each model uses, there's no telling. Even S&W in its website doesn't reveal whether it's a K or L frame.
Prefacing the model number with the frame size would be a welcome addition. I think S&W did a magnificent job in the beginning with its -2, -3, etc. on the gun to indicate which version.
It could be viewed as the precursor to the system of identifying versions of the same computer program, such as 7.2, 7.3, etc.
And when stainless steel was introduced, it was a great idea to indicate SS models with a prefacing 6, as in 617 or even a new model designation beginning in 6 such as the Model 66.
But today, it seems all over the map. Frustrating.
