On 02JAN1986 an F-15 Eagle from the 57th Fighter Interceptor Squadron based in Keflavik, Iceland crashed into the sea killing the pilot, Capt. Steve Jessor Nelson, USAF. Search and Rescue efforts were hampered by bad weather and Steve's body nor any of the wreckage was ever recovered.
My connection to Steve, which I learned only recently through an ancestry match, is that he was my half-brother. I feel saddened that I was never given the opportunity to know him while he was alive. He was six years older than me and I'm sure we would have had some good times together, especially since our military service years coincided.
So here's to you, Steve. You were an officer and a gentleman who died defending the country we both love.
If anyone in the forum had the pleasure of knowing Steve or even meeting him at some point in their Air Force career, I would love to hear from you.
First picture of Steve is his Air Force Academy Cadet portrait.
