For a classic 9mm-- Hi Power or S&W 639. I consider either the most graceful and elegant 9mms made. You can sculpt steel and aluminum in ways that are impossible with polymers. Tune them and you have elegance, reliability and power.
For a really classic and distinct 9mm-- Radom VIS35 3 lever. Works exactly like a 1911. For $1000, if you search carefully, you could pick up one in good mechanical shape with a worn finish. Since you intend to carry it, have it nicely refinished. The Nazis didn't care much about finishing, like the Poles did, so there is room for improvement with the Nazi guns. (If you wanted to triple your expense, at least, - find a pre-war Polish Eagle VIS35. Best pistol of WWII!)
For a modern Classic 9mm: SIG P228. The P226 refined.
FWIW- my 9mms are a SIG P226 CPO and a SIG P6 with a P225 mainspring. No regrets with either, both are accurate and reliable. I bought the pair for less than the price of a Hi-Power.
