Mine came from S&W today. I had forgotten I had them on backorder since July 2013. The magazine follower is installed correctly, but the orange tab is new -- my other magazines don't have any exterior tabs. What is the purpose of the change?

The orange tab is what locks the bolt back when the magazine is empty. I have 25 S&W magazines and ALL of them have the tab. Some of them are three years old,so nothing has been changed. In fact, I have never seen a S&W magazine that DIDN'T have one.

10 round LONG magazines do. All others have orange.

The tabs don't show when the magazines are loaded, so I had forgotten about the tabs when I put the new ones away. And, yes, they are blue on the converted long 10-round magazines.
