10 round magazine tweak

You couldn't insert a loaded mag w/ the slide forward. Now I can.

I've heard this a lot. I've even watched a few guys struggle with it. In every case it was technique that was the problem rather than equipment. I've never had trouble inserting a full mag with the slide closed.

Here's how I do it...(yeah, I know this isn't an M&P, but the technique works with any gun)

First, index the mag:

There are several advantages to doing this, but mostly it helps you line the mag up with the mag well.

Next, put the flat of the magazine against the flat of the mag well:

Use a slight angle and this will be easier.

Finally, in one smooth, firm motion, insert the mag using the heel of your hand:

Where most have trouble is by using a two step motion. They insert the mag a little and then whack it with their hand to insert it. I can't explain why this doesn't work, but it doesn't. It also takes more time, but that's another subject.


Altering your mags could be a felony. So, I don't recommend it. However, in all the time we've had the 10 round limitation here in CA, I've never heard of a person even being cited for it. That doesn't make it right, it just tells us that it's not something the cops are looking for initially. I'm sure it would be tacked on as an additional charge if you committed another crime though.

First, this is a great forum and thanks for all the help.

Second, the M&P 9mm FS 10 round magazine is a b^&ch and many people have issues with it loaded with 10 rounds. The minor fixes help a lot and eliminate most issues. If you don't have one you don't understand how tough it is. I had to buy a new FS 9mm with 10 round mags because that was all they had in stock not because it was mandated in TN. The S&W 'expert' at my local range tried the gun and said I also had a 10 pound trigger and he'd fix it for me if I bought the spring. I said thanks and how can I get the mag fully loaded? He gave me all the **** about being a sissy and man up etc. until he tried it and couldn't get 8 rounds in it. Uplula and shaving the follower solved all of my issues. Could I properly seat the mag with 10 rounds in it B4 the fix... I don't know I couldn't get 10 rounds in the mag even with an Uplula.

I don't know if this was directed at me or not. Even so, I have 2 full size 9mm 10 round mags and about 10 .40 full size 10 round mags and 2 .40 compact 10 round mags. My father-in-law has several 9mm compact 10 round mags. So, yeah, I know all about them and I do understand just how difficult it is.
