Condition seemed to be good.

This is another example of- what an item is selling for vs what it's worth.
Someone who really wants one will buy it sooner or later.
I'm no glock fan at all, in fact I only own one- a G20SF that weighs less, holds more, has OEM support, and a huge aftermarket. If I wanted to get into 10mm, glock has several models. Sig can fill your need if you prefer metal. My gun purchases are almost always pragmatic, and I'm not a collector, so I would not pay $1K for an obsolete pistol.
I'm hopeful that once the buying frenzy is over the gun makers will start branching out to include 10mm guns. Prices on the S&Ws may come down and the collectors will be able to get theirs.

Absolutely. I paid almost $800 for my 1076 and I paid that much simply because I wanted one for carry.
Like I said, sooner or later someone will buy it.
There's the problem I've been running into for the last 4-5-6 months now...
... the attitude on the part of dealers and other sellers that "someone will buy it eventually no matter how high the price"! 
And the worst part is that they are right more often than they are wrong.
Price are up in my area. There is no denying it. It's not a blip. It's a trend.
And I'm not talking about cheap modern plastic. I'm talking about all-metal guns... collectible guns... desirable guns... *REAL* guns.

Nice score. That's at least $200 under the market, maybe $250 with the three mags.

I watched auctions and bid on several 1006's through the summer and never bought one for a price I was willing to pay... but I did find a good deal on the new SIG 220 SAO 10mm and bought it a few weeks ago. I have only run a few mags through it for function testing and it has been flawless. Glad I passed on the S&W.

Very nice 1006, most were not shot that much for several reasons, ammo was higher priced, not available. Therefore it should a great pistol.
I have shot mine since early 1990 and it has been a great shooter for me.

Well, I bought my 1006, 1076 and 1066 back in 2008, the first two from a local dealer at the same time and the last one at the Ventura County Gun Show a few months after that. I was able to do so at excellent prices.
Now, based on what I've been seeing and NOT seeing around here, I would put the going prices here in Southern California for one in really nice 98% or better condition without box at around:
1006: $725 - $850 depending on exact location and philosophy of store owner.
1066: $775 - $850
1076: $800 - $950
It's hard to figure this S&W 10mm pistol stuff out here because they just don't come up for sale that much. One reason for this is because of our laws out here don't allow the pistols to be sold as a "used" gun by a firearms dealer. So, the only way you can get one is on "consignment". However, some dealers have told me that when a 3rd Gen Big Boy (.45 and 10mm) goes up for $700 or under, it doesn't last but a 2 or 3 days.
Finally, I will add this, if I was to see one of these 10mm pistols locally and it was in the condition I like (99%+ with or without box), I would probably pull the trigger at the low end of the price ranges above. For one LNIB, I would dig even deeper in my pockets.

I paid $600 for my 1076 with 1 mag in 2011 so I'd say you did OK
I never thought I got a great deal, but I didn't feel I over paid either.
Waaayyy to much for a gun with the finish on the slide altered.
