When did Smith change from yellow to white followers on their 10mm mags. What is the current value of each? I bought a box of mags and I'm not a 10mm guy.
Thanks!

The yellow follower came first, the white follower was later. The guns were only offered for four years, I have no idea when the changeover happened.

I have both types. I own only a single S&W 10mm (1006) and in thousands of rounds I have NEVER seen a difference in performance with either and it helps that the pistol simply never experiences failures.

I would just assume that picky buyers would prefer or choose the white follower magazines, but I only say this after making it very clear that anyone seeking a S&W 10mm magazine is going to be thrilled to find one regardless of the follower.

As a side note, you show only one pic but I have never seen a yellow follower like the one in your pic -- the common yellow follower has a rounded shape at the front tip like a 4506 mag, the white ones have the pointy follower. So the one you show is interesting.

Sorry, current value -- $60 each is a good price that reflects the market. You can find some examples on Gunbroker where they go a bit higher but you'll find exponentially more with a silly high price that don't sell.

The early angled yellow followers supposedly contributed to cartridge nose dives, hence the change.

Looks like them.

This picture is only black & white but you can see the prototype mags had a odd "V" indentation toward the front of the mag that didn't make it on the later production mags.

The yellow followers will hold the slide open after the last round.
The white one won’t.

The 9 that I have with white followers hold the slide open just fine after the last round, and have for about 25 years. The 2 or 3 that originally had yellow followers also do, and I never saw any difference between the two colors in operation. I changed them to white anyway, just 'cause.

The one yellow follower mag my 1006 came with I actually did notice a nosedive FTF my first trip out to the range with it. However, that mag apparently had worse down to it as well (the feed lips were shaved back by the previous owner for some reason).

And that was supposedly the reason for the 'upgrade' in 10XX-series mags from yellow followers to white ones. There was apparently a change in the angle of the follower to keep the bullet's nose more elevated for feeding up the ramp.

S&W was said to have received complaints concerning nose-diving rounds in early runs of 10XX-series pistols.

I have to assume at least some number of these complaints came from the Bureau's FTU - since their field agents' 1076s would've been fed by mags containing these early, first generation yellow followers.

And if you think about it, the FBI/FTU would've definitely been the first folks to alert S&W to the problem - if it was deemed to be a significant one, and not just occasional or user-induced.

I had two such mags with the yellow followers that came with my 1006. Those mags are strictly for range-only use.

So whether for night-stand duty or street carry, if it involves a serious use of your 10XX-series pistol, it's the white followers in your 10mm mags.

If your a 10mm man, always ask yourself: WWSCD? ***

The question answers itself: white followers.

I’ve only had my 1006 since last July. I have 5 magazines with a mix of white and yellow followers and so far they all work equally well with HP and FMJ ammo. Wish I could find some for $60.

I've got a box full of 10mm mags, actual count is going to be close to 40 mags. But then I've got a 1006, 1066 and 1076. My carry mags are all white followers with new springs. As far as pricing goes, the least I've paid was $5.00 about five years ago at a local gun show. Seller had no idea what it was for. The most I've paid was north of $400 for an FBI "Go Bag" 15 round mag. I've got two of them and still looking for a couple "Go Bag" 11 round mags. Average street price I've seen in the last year is around $75.00 for a standard 9 round mag regardless of follower color.

There is a guy offering them for $70 each and $8 shipping and will combine shipping. He’s on the same place where everything is.

When I bought my used Model 1006 in 2017 it came with 5 additional magazines. All had the yellow followers. The gun had originally shipped in June of 1991. Before I even test fired it I replaced all of the yellow followers with the white ones, replaced all magazine springs and replaced the plastic baseplates on 3 or 4 of the mags that were a little chewed up. At that time the replacement parts were available on ebay for just a few dollars to upgrade each mag. I did retain the original parts for some future collector who will obsess over such things.
