Hey guys I posted this a couple of weeks ago on 10mm talk but nobody knew for sure but I got a few ideas were these might have came from. I went to the Hickory NC gun show a few weeks back and I came across a vendor with original S&W 10mm mags. I own 2 10xx series Smiths and mags are getting harder to come by and down right expensive. The vendor had a few 9 round standard mags. To my knowledge all 10xx series pistols came with 9 round mags. Smith had some longer high capacity mags but as far as I know that was it. But when the vendor opened the case I saw 2 shorter S&W nags with the early yellow follower that were 7 rounders. I asked to see them and they appeared to be Smith mags but they were too short to fit a 10xx series grip frame. The vendor said he got the whole lot on trade and had no idea about the 7 round mags. I bought a couple 9 round mags and if I had extra money to blow I would have bought the short mags. As far as I know Smith never made a short grip 10mm so it could have been for a modified gun or a conversion. I haven't found anything concrete. Do any of you have any ideas I am just curious. I have hopes of collecting all the 10xx series pistipls but if there is a hidden gem out there I want to k ow about it.

Did the magazine have 10mm stamped on it? Maybe obvious but I had to ask. If so this would be very curious.

Yes they had 10mm on them and had the early yellow followers. I thought maybe somebody creative might have shortened a stock mag but I don't know.

There was a 1016 prototype. 7+1 IIRC. May have actually been more than one of them. There use to be a picture of it on this board, but I can't find it.

AFAIK it didn't ever go to sales samples, much less production units.

Those were probably mags from that program. Hope this helps! Regards 18DAI

That's interesting. The only reason to shorten one of those would be for a similar concept to what Bad Man One did with the 40 cal 3rd gens to enable them to shoot 10mm.

The only other possible explanation is that they were for the conceptual 1016 which I have only ever heard of one pistol that was actually made.

If the price was right than it might have been worth buying for the fun of it. What was he asking for those?

They were 35 each and other than length they were the same dimensions as the 9 round 10mm mags. I'm going to another show this weekend if that vendor is there and still has them I'll buy them just to have them.

You've got my attention with this one!

I know it has been bugging me. If the mags were out there and they looked used so it made me wonder. I hope that vendor is there and odds are unless some collector snagged them they should be. It was a local vendor but I can't find the business card. If Smith made a compact 10mm I would love to see it if not own it.

Happy hunting on a 1046
JNT
No kidding that one might not happen but I missed a 1046 at a gunshow a couple of months back. He only wanted 1100 for it with factory box and with factory ports but I didnt have the cash at the time. Oh well thats how it goes but if I can at least get the rest of them.

I found the dealer today and he had 3 of the 7 round 10mm mags. I was mistaken they are not stamped with 10mm but they say magazine must have yellow follower. They have a thicker base pad. They are definately 10mm mags. I bought one and loaded it. I will post pictures of it later when I have a chance. I got his business card also so I can contact him. He hadn't sold any of them since the last time. I guess worse case scenario I wasted $35 but it's good for conversation anyway.

Mystery solved. When I got home I loaded the magazine and it held 10mm rounds just fine but it wouldn't fit the mag well. I broke out the calipers and measured it. It is just a tick wider than the 10mm mags. It is not even noticable until you measure it. I tried 45 acp and it fit right in the mag. Apparently at some point in time S&W made yellow followers for the 45 mags also. I'm trying to figure out which one it fits because it is a good bit shorter than the 9 round 10mm mags. I was thinking Chiefs Special but they were 6 round. The 457 was 7 round and pics I found they looked like it but they had black followers. I'm sure it's a 45 mag now but the yellow follower is throwing me a curve and its marked on the mag that it has to have a yellow follower.

:/ that's how it ends eh? all my 4516 mags have yellow followers

45 followers went orange -> yellow -> black

When S&W added the indents at the rear of the mag near the feedlips it required a different follower in order to clear those indents. The reason for the warning on the mag tube as the previous orange follower would get hung up. The current black follower was designed to work as a replacment for either.
