110 grain .357 magnum loads

Hi, I just purchased a bunch of .357 magnum 110grain JSP rounds. I got them at a good price and that was the only .357 magnum rounds I have found in 3 months. How good are the 110grain rounds? I am used to shooting 158 grain and 125 grain in my 2.5" 686..I have shot several 110 grain .38 special rounds.
ARE THE 110 GRAIN .357 ROUNDS BALISTICS SIMILAR TO THE .38 SPECIAL LOADS????

The 357 loaded with 110gr bullets is not bad. Expect about 10" of penetration.
The 125-140gr are best for self defense.
It just depends on the loading how hot they are.
Some 110s scream while others like Win white box are like 9mm +P+. They are all quite a bit better than 38+p in terms of velocity.
The Border Patrol used a 110gr Magnum back in the 80s with good luck.

There certainly are better 357 loads but the 110gr is ok

I prefer 125s, but would, and have, carried 110s (Rem. SJHPs) with confidence. The .357 magnum is a hard cartridge to screw up. 110 JSPs shouldn't lack in penetration, especially from a short barrel. I would expect overpenetration.

I bought a one box of WWB 110 grain in.357 to shoot in my Ruger and S&Ws M65s and they handle great in my GP100 4 inch fixed sigted revolver and grouped less than 2 inches at 25 yards paper target. In my S&W65s, they grouped about about 2.25 at 25 yards. My 3 inch and 4 inch M65s. rz625-8

No. You should see about 200-300 fps more than a hot 110gr .38 Special +P.

Give the choice between a .357 JSP and a .38 JHP, I would use the .38 with the better bullet. I wouldn't want to be shot with either though!

You gotta use what you can get, but a JSP is not the first choice.

I shot some years ago in a S&W Model 19 and again a while back in a 6-inch Colt Python. I know nothing of terminal ballistics but have the impression that they exhibit less recoil.

I've shot a fair number of both Federal and WW white box 110gr. JHPs. Both seem to be accurate, and recoil is much less than any factory 125gr. JHP I've found. Therefore, that's what I've always given my daughter for her SP-101. However, the ones I've shot have LOTS of flash. They will also shoot well below the sights in most fixed-sight revolvers. I filed a bit off the front sight on my daughter's revolver to compensate.

The WWB 110grn. JHP's shoot just fine out of my 4" GP100. I've been using them as personal protection ammo in that gun for years. Even in low light, I don't find the muzzle flash to be too bad at all.

I should have been clearer. From 4" and longer barrels, flash is not that bad. From the 2 1/4" SP-101, it's a bear, but the Federals are worse than the WWs, at least in my experience.

You should see about 200-300 fps more than a hot 110gr .38 Special +P.

Here's what my chrono says:
WWB 110gr .357 mag from a 4" M28 avg 1283 fps.
Rem 110gr .38 Spec (std pressure)from a 4" M15 avg 991 fps.
US Treasury 110gr .38 Special from a 4" M15 avg 1077 fps.
SuperVel 110gr. .38 Special from a 4" M15 avg 1221 fps.

Looks like it sort of depends on the particular .38 Special load.

I will be shooting them in a 2.5" 686 so I am not worried about recoil...just for shooting..I carry 125gr.GDHP for carry loads.

That makes sense to me. Heck, I have a ported Taurus 85 snubbie and even target loads put out a heck of a lot of flash in that thing!

Thanks for the chrono info. The WW .357 mag 110gr JHP is what we use in our .357's be it home defense gun, truck gun, or ccw gun.
