12 Gauge Coach Gun

Stoeger is still making them.

Basspro and Sportsman's Warehouse has the Stoeger, Sportsman also sells the CZ Sharp-Tail coach gun, but those are a lot more expensive than the Stoeger.

The Stoeger coach gun has long been a staple of cowboy action shooters.

During the Clinton Presidency, the Chi Comms imported 2 or 3 different "Coach Guns" I had an inexpensive one. It was crude but well put together. I used a gauge to check bore diameter; both barrels .729 one end to the other! no flutter in the dial gauge at all, highly unusual!!! The outside diameters were all over the place, but never thinner than .050! (.025 was one of the old time minimums.)

I used mine in Cowboy Action matches for a couple seasons, and got rid of it for a 25% profit. Never had any mechanical problems for about 8000 rounds (including practice), just kind of butt ugly!

Jimmy, are you looking for a hammer shotgun or hammerless? As was mentioned earlier, Stoeger makes a good one at a very reasonable price. I had one and really enjoyed it, but my daughter wanted it so I gave it to her.

I currently have a CZ hammer gun and am completely sold on it. Excellent quality, but as Gunhacker mentioned, they're a little pricey. Fortunately, I got mine used so it wasn't so bad.

I had an old Fox B in 16 gauge years ago. Cut the barrels down to 19 inches, just so there wouldn't be any question as to the legal length. But, alas, like my Stoeger, one of my sons liked it a lot, so he's got it now.

Finally, I got hold of an old A.H. Fox Sterlingworth. I had the barrels cut down and used that for years in Cowboy Action Shooting.

So, that's another option for you, Jimmy. Find an old used side-by-side and have the barrels cut down.

Anyway, here's a picture of the two I currently have. The A.H. Fox on top and the CZ hammer gun on the bottom. Good luck in your search.:)

I saw one a few years ago , the real deal coach gun . It was an oldie , marked " Wells Fargo " , hanging on the back wall in a little expresso coffee shop in Az . My former BIL bought a stoeger but wouldn't shoot it so I got the pleasure . I bought a box of 12 ga shells , took it out in the country and had fun . They are a pleasure to shoot , even with the short barrels . Regards Paul

Come on, the Coach Gun needs hammers and a Stage Coach (if you have a LARGE garage)

I got one of the Baikal SxS when EAA was importing them. This one's barrels were pinched together in a foiled robbery attempt, so I was able to buy the NEW firearm very cheap.

I was all set to buy a Stoeger when this damaged one fell into my hands

It was no problem for me since I always wanted a NFA Title II Coach Gun. I shortened the tubes to just in front of the hand guard thus bypassing where the damage was. They are about 11" long

I am pleased with the firearm's quality and they are offered at a great price point. I even bought a second one but have not converted it yet. I may just keep it stock

We shoot the little one with the short 1 1/2" 12 gauge shells for fun. I do not want to scare folks away from it. Obviously it is cylinder bore

The cowboy action standard is the Rossi, if you can find one in good shape. I cut down a Le Fever I found, as well as an early, lower grade Fox.

I have a Hopkins & Allen 12g SxS. Hammers and steel barrels. Missing the breakdown latch and screw. Not a cream puff but solid gun. Has little collector value I’ve been going to look for latch and chop to 18.25”. My muzzle job on the void between barrels is to shove a little tuft of brass wool in void, flux and fill with low temp silver solder. Draw file square with barrels.

I have the Stoeger in nickle- fun gun to shoot. It's the only 'big-box-store' gun I've bought since the 80s, and only did so because they had it priced very low. I don't know if they accidentally priced the nickle one at the blue price, or mis-marked it, but it was too good a deal to pass up.

Good home defense gun too.
