135gr short barrel 357 ammo

I finally got a box of 135gr short barrel 357 ammo for my 640-1,with the wheather inupstate NY and my current leg problems (torn ligament and a disc a little out of spec)it will be awhile before I get to the range.
My question, what kind of recoil can I expect,I've got a set of Hogue Bantams coming but right now she has stock S&W wood J frame grips with a Tyler T grip. Any info would be appreciated.

I keep this excellent round in my 340PD, which has Crimson Trace LG-405 lasergrips on it. The recoil is little, if any, more than what I perceive with 158gr. +P .38 ammo. In the all-steel 640-1, it should be a pussycat.

I have a scandium 357, and I'm now switching to the 38+P short bbl stuff. I fired some 357 short bbl and some Speer 125 full house, and I couldn't tell the difference between them. Both rounds really hurt my hand a lot. That's more recoil than my 44 magnum Ruger. For the longest time I told myself that I could handle the magnums in my J frame, but when I saw the gel tests of the 38+P short bbl stuff I decided to switch. I will receive the new ammo on Friday, and I hope the recoil is markedly less.

Interesting. Just goes to show how subjective the response to recoil really is. I find the Short Barrel .357 load to be MUCH more comfortable to shoot than full-house .357s in my .340PD. The .38 Snubby load is only about 100 fps. behind the .357, so while the difference will be noticeable, it won't be as much as you might think. I find the difference between hot 125s and Short Barrel 135gr. .357 to be huge, and between short Barrel .357 and Short barrel .38 to be negligible, but noticeable.

I have a box that I mean to run through a Model 60 whenever I get back to the range. I've shot them in heavier guns and found no comparison with full power loads that plain out HURT in the 60. Any little advantage is good, so if they're tolerable they definitely get the nod.

Now when I get around to purchasing an M&P340, that may be a different story

Me too. I don't know if comfortable is the word for SB, but full power .357 just don't work in my 360 PD. SB .357s are doable, but worse than full power .44 mag. from my 5" 629.

Thanks for the replies, I took a look at the hollow point on the bullet and I do believe you could drive a truck into it, haha,it's big.

Yep, there's a noticeable difference alright. That's to aide expansion at the lower velocity. It seems to work pretty well. The R&D folks at Speer know what they're doing.

I find the recoil to be manageable in my (steel) model 649, but I have stock Uncle Mikes Combat grips. I expect you would get more recoil with the wooden grips.

I fire 145gr Winchester Silvertip .357 magnum ammo in my M640-1 without discomfort because it's a all steel revolver. I found the Speer 135gr Short Barrel .357 Magnum ammo more comfortable to shoot in the M640-1 than the Speer 135gr Short Barrel .38 Special +P ammo in a M642 Airweight.

I have a Ruger SP101. I noticed a reduction in recoil and muzzle flash when I shot the short barrel stuff. I have switched over to carrying the short barrel now instead of the full power 125 stuff. I am heading out camping and hunting this weekend and I am going to try and shoot a couple of raccons that keep raiding the corn bins. If I can get one of them I will try to recover the bullet and take some pics to post. If not I will tell you how they performed.

Would I be an idiot if I carried these before trying them at the range? I'm guessing at 7-15 yds they should hit pretty close to POA,please let me know your opinions.

You're not likely to see very much difference in POI between the 135s and your FBI loads, but there will be some. In the few fixed-sight revolvers in which I've shot the Short Barrel loads, they have hit closer to POA than 158s did, where 158s are usually a bit above POA. Your results may well be different, as every gun and every shooter is different.

I just shot 10 rounds of 38+P short bbl ammo through my scandium J frame. I would call the recoil on this 38+P respectable and a little bit discomforting. The 357 short bbl ammo was down right painful. I did not enjoy shooting this round. I did enjoy shooting the 38+P.

I chronographed the Speer 135 grain short barrel 357 in my three inch Model 65. It averaged 1116 fps for ten shots at ten feet from the muzzle. It shot a very nice group about 1 1/2 inches low at 25 yards. I use it as my summer carry load.
