I've got a 1975 vintage 14-3 that experiences occasional light strikes. The issue does not appear to be ammo specific, and the strain screw is torqued all the way down. Any thoughts on this being corrected by replacing the main screw? Thanks.

Has the strain screw been "fitted" (shorten)? You could test that by fitting a spent primer over the end to exert more pressure.

Light strikes, common failure to fire, most commonly is a weak mainspring or a short stain screw, causing a weak mainspring effort. That is assuming that there is no interference with with the hammer fall. If the mainspring has been bent, it will cause a light strike. either replace or straighten the mainspring. If the strain screw has been shortened, replace and screw all the way tight. If in doubt, replace both!

or the rebound spring might have been clipped to less than 17 coils OEM

The rebound spring won't cause light strikes, just sluggish trigger return. The mainspring tension, or lack of, is the main event, followed by firing pin length, and interference of the hammer fall, as mentioned above.

Some "smiths" are known to alter the "bow" of the main spring/hammer spring. Many will have a small piece of hardwood shaped like a wedge or door stop but much smaller. This wedge is used to leverage the spring to decrease or increase the tension!

I'm not a gunsmith but someone here might jump in to verify the effectiveness of this procedure!

Smiles,
