I am the proud new owner of a nice 15-2 with target grips with diamonds, k67818X serial. My first 15 model and love the size and balance.

What would be the year of manufacture on this one?

Tks,:)

That should be a 1966 gun. You are going to love that 15, never met one yet that wasent a fine shooter, enjoy.

I have a 15-2 That was made in 1965 and it is a sweet revolver. DEEP bluing and butter smooth action!

The S&W M-15s are in my opinion along with the M-14s are the masterpieces of the centerfire "duty" revolvers.

thanks!!!

I cleaned and polished this new 38 and it look great! My next S&W milestone will have to learn to take the action apart so I may do more of a thorough clean job!

Do you experts believe a rookie should try this or should I leave this to the smith's?

It can be done by anyone, "BUT", not before you get a good set of gunsmithing screwdrivers, "AND" get a video on proper disassembly and watch it several times. The Jerry Miculek video is good and shows step by step how to do it.

Thanks Again

I will look for that video and thanks for the vote of confidence!

The cylinder release is a little sticky or harder to get released than all my others. I was thinking it was gummed up or simply needed an interior cleaning. Is there an obvious solution with this issue?

Hey there, Tiger Bait!
Congratulations on acquiring a Combat Masterpiece. They are great revolvers. I have a hard time deciding whether I love the Model 15s or the Model 14s the most (granted they are very close to being the same gun). All my Model 14s have 6" barrels, so I enjoy shooting the Model 15 from time to time.
I began shooting the Combat Masterpiece when I was about 14 years old and had fired several thousand rounds through one by the time I graduated high school.
Then I went into the Air Force and was sent overseas. Shortly after I arrived in SE Asia, I was ordered to the firing range to qualify on the .38 because I was going to be escorting bomb convoys and they wanted us carrying sidearms in addition to our M16s.
So I get out the to range and the Sgt hands me a Model 15. I thought to myself, "this going to be fun." So I shot my 100 rounds and took my target up to the guy for a "count." I handed him my target with absolutely no middle left in the black - I mean it was just gone. He looks at it, sees there is nothing there to count, then looks up at me with a duck-look on his face and says, "Here's your chit. Go get your Expert Marksmanship ribbon."
Sure - some of it was many hours of practice. But a lot of it was the gun. They just shoot where they are pointed.
Enjoy yours.

Congtraulations on the purchase of the model 15 as I bought my first one a few months ago to go with my Model 18's and 14's. They are excellent revolvers and you are going to love it.

JP, that is a great story! I suppose I am doing the same thing with my son as your dad did with you. He started shooting with me when he was 10 and is now 13 and he is a crack shot with most any weapon. The only award he get is deer, ducks, hogs and small critters but he really loves shooting dad's new toys that seem to always find our house. He too really loves the history of weapons and what makes their differences in use and design. I have finally got him liking wheel guns inlieu of glocks which are still his favorite handgun but he is coming around.

Congratulations on your purchase of a Model 15-2. You will like it. My first firearm was a 15-2 that I bought new in 1967. I used it for match shooting in Longview, Texas in 1967, then at the Gator Gun Club matches at the old Boulware Springs range south of Gainesville, Florida in the late 60's and early 70's. I graduated to a Model 52-2 as soon as I could afford one, but, strangely, my bullseye scores never improved. Lots and lots of 148 gr wadcutters have gone through that 15-2, and it is as smooth and nice to shoot today as it was 44 years ago. Oh, you are probably smarter about this than I was, but be sure to treat those diamond Magnas as the gems they are. I went through Herritt's Shooting Stars and Fitz Grips and Pachmyers and had to go to eBay a couple of years ago to find correct Magnas to replace those I had used as down payment for the Pachmyers.

My mistake. I did not recall in composing my post that your 15-2 has diamond target grips, not Magnas. Even greater reason for celebration. Good luck.

aww man I thought I was gonna see some 15-2 goodness!
