Wondering just what might have been so unusual about a 4" 15-2 that it was bid up to $2800 in an auction today. It was a pretty nice looking one, didn't have any USAF stamped on it, was a K7443xx s/n. I was somewhat shocked seeing that high a price on what I thought was a fairly common gun.

So that's what they're going for now, a plain vanilla .38, not NIB, LNIB, or ANIB? $700? Guess I gotta get out more. And wouldn't there be sales tax on top of that $2800+?

I paid $580 for a LNIB 15-2 from 1967 less than a year ago. Mine has the target hammer and trigger. If I could sell mine for nearly 3 grand I’d think about it. It’d be nice to more than quadruple my money but in the end making $2000 isn’t gonna change my life a bit so I guess I’ll hold onto it.

My LGS has always priced their goods reasonably until this year.
Some are still fairly priced, but when they put a number like $1295 on a nice 15-3, I cringe...and it doesn't help that it's one of a very few of their few offerings that I might actually desire.

That's what it would be here too. It has always been like that here though. They also keep the better pieces.

I bought one for 600 18 months ago, box and all, and I still can't figure out is it has been fired. Sure I could not do that now, but it would not be 2800

You can ask whatever $ you want; doesn't mean you're getting it. Consignment case at our range/LGS had a mint Gen 3 Colt SAA, nickle, 4.75" bbl, 45 Colt marked by owner at $2500. Perhaps not out-of-line, but nobody touched it. Not even me and that is an almost-grail gun for me. Lowered to $2250: still no takers. Difficult times to look for even a fair price like that and perhaps the wrong shop/clientele.

That $2800+ Model 15 seems hinky to me, can't really say why...

Yikes !! I bought a very nice 15-3, 4" tapered barrel, magna stocks for $475 in early Sept.


Since mine is newer, should I ask $3300 for it?

Just for comparison. I bought a 1974, Model 15-3 (98%) at a local auction in 2015 for $661 ($575 bid plus buyers premium). Thought I paid a little too much but it is beautiful revolver but you know how it is at a live auction-you can get caught up in the bidding with another person! Grips numbered to gun but no box, papers. Shown in picture with it's S&W .38 stable mates from the safe.

That serial number certainly puts it in the time frame Model 15-2's were going to the AF. S/N K739127 was issued to an AF general officer.


My 15-2, shipped in 1963, cost me $330.00. But it has a replacement rear sight.

Sorry, that's just plain stupid to get involved in one of those auctions to the extent that you spend next month's pay check on a gun. It's just as bad as sitting at a slot machine, thinking you'll hit the jackpot because of how long you played it.
