15-22: good for 11 yr daughter?

Contemplating getting one for my daughter (11), left eye dominant and left handed. She is a decent shot but needs something lighter than her 10-22. So far this is the top of my list, but any info can help.

Bought one of the second gen for 10yr old grandson he loves it has no problem handleing it also has magpul sights and hand guard a lot of fun to shoot here in mass you can only have 10 rd mags

I would say YES.

This platform lends itself to righty or lefty with the only issue being a left hand, is that your face is the same side as the ejection port. The brass deflector usually stops any rogue brass from coming backwards towards the shooter, so as long as she has her eyes and ears on, she should be fine, if it is a concern you can get brass catchers. It certainly is lightweight and easy to clean and maintain and the rifle will grow with her capabilities, abilities and needs.

Also a great bit of fun for her (and yourself )

I would recommend them to anyone, but i am a bit smitten with mine.

Please make sure that your daughter has basic firearms training before being handed a semi-auto firearm. Once she has mastered absolute trigger finger safety and is muzzle aware the S&W 15-22 will be a great rifle for her. It can be customized for her size in any number of ways. .......

I'm not a fan of letting young kids handle semi auto firearms.

Only after many days in the field, not the range, am I satisfied that youngsters can be trusted in terms of muzzel and trigger control.

I'm a believer in single shot rifles for youngsters.

They're great for 5 year olds.

Absolutely agree with firearm safety for young ones. This is something I preach to all my children from an early age. I have taken her to the Dept of Conservation firearm training for her age group and would only continue proper respect and safety training for firearms.

My kids love my 15-22. Daughter is 14, started shooting at 10, son is 8. It was the first gun either of them shot, other than an old single shot .22 I have.

The biggest issue I have is getting it out of there hands when it's my turn, LOL. Seriously though, I love the fact that my kids love to shoot, and that they are familiar with gun safety, usage and everything else at such a young age.

My 9 year old loves my 15-22 Magpul. She of course loads all the mags she uses herself and it's almost impossible to get it back from her once I let her start shooting it. Started her on a single shot Savage Rascal which she still likes to target plink with and she's also quite fond of my 63-3.

You know they make a 10/22 Youth model and have factory 5 round magazines.

Not sure there's going to be much weight difference.......

Edit: checked specs Ruger Compact 10/22 4.5lbs and the Muddy Girl 15-22 72 oz.( aka 4.5lbs)

I think it depends on what type of shooting you are doing. If it is just pliking then its a fine choice but if you are shooting for little tiny groups or looking to develop "true" marksmanship then there are better platforms.

Look for youth 22LR guns which are made for younger shooters.

Short length of pull 12" , single shot adapter / but will use CZ 5/10 round magazines /our wears a little Weaver 1-3x20 scope.

My daughter just turned 10 the other day and she has been out shooting my 15-22 and loves it. she is left handed but right eye dominate she just shoots right handed . I am sure your 11 year old will love it

I let my two younger kids use it all the time. My daughter is 10 and my son is 7. My son only gets one round at a time in the magazine, while I let my daughter shoot a whole magazine. Its better to be safe. My son does have a single shot 22 rifle and a Henry lever action 22 that his grandfather bought him when he was 2, but he likes the 15-22 because its like dad's AR's. They both have been taught gun safety and are also reminded how important it is every time they handle a gun loaded or unloaded.

I love that grandpa bought a Henry for a two year old. My sisters and I bought our dad one when he was 55. It turned him into a five year old. He loves that thing

Check out the Ruger American Rimfire Compact. Bolt action, uses 10/22 mags....so single, five, ten shot mags and more available .....
Stock is modular, so when a longer length of pull is needed.... ~$20 change for longer stock module. Just unscrew sling stud, change stock!
