Different agencies switched at different times but that particular
load was common in the 1970s. The yellow box from Winchester
is the 1960s- early 1970s pattern box. Winchester brought of the
SWC-HP load known as the FBI load in 1971 in the yellow box.

A lot of agencies continued with round nose lead until the
first JHP ammo came into availability but some would not
authorize the JHP ammo so the SWC was the next best thing
at the time.

Hi guys , here a couple of pictures of the Winchester ammo box
, odd these must be pre +P loads 1060 ft/sec.
any ideas ??

NYCPD was still carrying the model 10 with 158 grain round nosed ammunition inthe late 70's after I had been released from active duty (USN) they still had the belt slides for the cartridges. Frank

The cop who shot that polar bear at the Staten Island Zoo (?) was using unauthorized ammo.

After Massad Ayoob published that story, I asked him if he was sure that the lead SWC-HP was the load used, and he insisted that it was.

If he sees this, he may tell us who told him that. I don't recall if he talked with the cop directly. But the bullet performed very well. I was impressed.

The yellow Winchester box is marked MS. I had to contact a W-W rep and he had to call the factory to learn what that meant: Maximum Service. I suspect that very few know that. Feel special about yourself today. :D

I think that some uniform police officers in NYC are still carrying revolvers. I was in NYC this past summer with my wife visiting family. We went downtown to Times Square, etc. Outside the cathedral I saw a NYC police officer on duty. In his holster was a S&W revolver. In the course of our conversation he stated that that was his issue weapon.

I went on to the Atlantic City Police Department in 1969 and we used the 158 grain round nose ball ammo for duty and the 158 grain semi wadcutter for requalification's each year up untill the early 1980's when we switched over to 158 grain Remington Hollow Point ammo.

That was the load until 1976 when the department switched to Reminton JHP +P. We all used privately purchased 38s and 357s but carried department issued ammunition. Two six round dump pouches and six in the revolver.

many, many agencies were carrying the M10 in the late 70's and for a number years beyond...

I think that it was in the mid 90's that the police chief in the largest town on the Cape retired. He did not allow his subordinates to carry speedloaders. I can understand revolvers, but no speedloaders? I'd be ashamed to show my face in public (the chief, not the cops).

I can't tell from the pics, does the box say 1060 fps on it somewhere? I doubt if it was really that fast, based on the testing methods used in that time period. That number is probably exaggerated like all the others loads of that day.
