Hello - New to this forum. I am a dealer who came across a very unusual 17-2 Revolver in the original box. Serial # K637636. In the blue box with matching serial number. The white end flap is upside down. As it should be. It has the 6 overwriten with 5 in the barrel lenght on the tag. On the other end of the box the 6 is overwriten to 5 also. The barrel is 5" with a ramp sight. I received this from a elderly gentlemans widow. So I can't ask about this.
The blueing is perfect. Does NOT look like a gunsmith could have done this perfectly. Could it have been returned to S&W for this ?
I can provide pics. I don't know how yet. Thanks !

Welcome! I’m going to guess you have a very special order revolver that was “upgraded” at the factory with the 5” barrel. Somebody must have had some sort of special status to have that work done. If you go up to the stickies section of any page, you should find instructions for how to post photos.

Sounds like a very nice find.

Are the S&W and caliber markings centered on the sides of the barrel or do they favor one end? If the barrel is a shortened 6" they will favor the muzzle end.

A letter from the factory would tell you for sure how it was shipped.

The evidence suggests you have a factory modified 5" model 17-2, but the only way to try to confirm this is a letter of authenticity from the SWHF:

Letters – Smith & Wesson Historical Foundation

However, it is possible the gun will not show up in the available records as a 5". When you are able to post photos (particularly of the barrel crown/muzzle/front sight) we can give you a more informed opinion.
