Rcvd. my 4th edition of the S & W book and just testing to see if I got things correct. Using my 17-2, Ser. K5631XX. That ser. should make it sometime in 1964, is that right? There is SPECIAL FEATURES: 14410 on the box label that I can't find the meaning of in the book, does anyone know what that number means. My 17-2 is like new and all numbers on it match. I will post some better pics. later.

Yes you have the year of production correct according to the book. Of course the shipping date would be later and could be in 1965. Only a letter will pin that down.

The problem with the book is that the feature codes given don't go back to 1964, they're only the codes used from 1984 - 94. In the 1984 - 86 period, the code for your gun would be 100502.

I would call S&W to confirm that your code 14410 is for a basic gun which yours is with no optional features like TT, TH, TS, etc.

Called S & W C S this afternoon and the young lady I spoke with really had no idea what the number means or stands for. She said maybe an SKU. Maybe if someone here knows for sure, they just might tell me. Hondo44 thanks for your reply.

#14410 is the Product Code. It is in the middle of the SKU (bar code #) between the serial # which comes first, and before the special order #. But your gun is too early to have a bar code. So tell her it's the Product Code #, she's got to have those.

Looks to me like 14410 was written on the end label after the revolver was shipped by S&W. It may be a product code, but I can't find any codes earlier than 1984. From the information on the label, the K-22 Masterpiece or Model 17 has a standard hammer and trigger, Magna stocks, 6-inch barrel and blue finish (no special features). Based on the partial serial number, your 17-2 most likely shipped in late 1964 to early 1965.

Nice to have a great revolver, box, and accessories.

As Doc44 stated, it's not a product code and was added after it left the factory.

I've got a few boxes marked like that. It was not uncommon for dealers or distributors to make use of that area. It was often used to mark the cost or selling price and sometimes they marked it in code.

I agree. I have a few boxes like that myself. I'm sure it is a dealer mark.

I do have a boxed Model 14-3 SAO, on the label of which the factory marked SA in the Special Features box.

Very nice PACKAGE! I have a 17-2, a little earlier than yours. K5622xx. It sure does shoot well! I have the gun only. Have target stocks for it also. Think that I paid $2.00 for the stocks on it from a flea market. Cleaned them, and good to go. Enjoy your 17! Bob
