I picked up a 17-3 and a 14-2 at an auction recently. They are both in pretty nice condition with the numbered stocks on the 17-3 but no boxes etc. They both show some holster wear but have not been abused. The 14-2 has a polished stainless target hammer. The trigger has the usual "case hardened" look. Is that normal?

14-2 triggers were color case-hardened carbon steel.

Now that you've posted photos, the trigger and hammer on the one with presentation grips have been polished. They should look like the ones on the one with the Magna grips.

Case coloring looks to have faded from the 14-2's hammer. No big deal.

Thanks. It's pretty much a nice, shooter grade so I'm not concerned.

Are those stocks factory? They are the only ones that I couldn't find a serial number on out of the bunch from this auction I bought.

Sorry the images are out of order. I had to resize some of them to get them to post. The gun with the Magna grips is the 17-3. It has a standard hammer and trigger. The smooth grips are on the 14-2. It has the target hammer that looks polished.

Cool score, OP!

I also have a 14, it's a no-dash 8-3/8" model. I wouldn't say it's rare, but I've never seen another one at any range.

I have a 17-4 as well, also in the 8-3/8" bbl.

I like my eclectic Smiths............ :D

I think the case is just worn off or faded on the 14 hammer. Those presentation grips are gorgeous!
Shoot 'em and enjoy. They're both great guns. My 17's and 14's are my favorites to shoot.
