List,

I recently purchased a very nice 17-4. I took it out to the range this weekend and it shoots like a laser. It has a beautiful trigger pull and I like it alot.

Problem: After about 50 rounds of federal bulk pack the cylinder started to bind with the forcing cone. The cylinder would no longer rotate. I could see where the cone and cylinder were shiny where it appears the two were coming into contact.

I cleaned the face of the cone and the cylinder and the binding ceased for another 30 rounds or so.

When I returned home I cleaned up and everything is working just fine again. I tried to get a business card between the cone and the cylinder (when the action is closed) and I could not. I cannot get a doubled up piece of 8.5"x11" sheet of paper into the gap. I CAN get a single sheet to pull through.

Question: Is this abnormal operation? Should this be repaired? What, if anything, should I do about this?

I really enjoy this S&W, but it is my first one and I am wondering if something is not wrong with it.

Thanks in advance.

Some addition information:

I checked to see if the cylinder would move front to back while in firing position - it does not. Everything is nice and tight.

I then checked to see if there was excessive rotation of the cylinder when in firing position - and again it I did not see anything unusual.

This revolver looks brand new. The guy I bought it from says he has had it over 10 years, shooting it only once or twice. The guy before him apparantly did not shoot it much either.

I hope this is not a major problem....

They build up crud under the extractor (star) between the extractor and cylinder. Clean there and then check your endshake. Crud and a little too much endshake will cause your symptoms.
