Just walked into LGS that used to be a hot spot but dried up about two years ago. Noticed a couple guys at the counter handling a revolver. The combat grips were a give away. I just patiently waited until they handed it back to the guy behind the counter and said something about "we'll be back". I walked up and asked to see it and after seeing the price I immediately put it on lay-away to stay under the radar of the 'accountant'. It appears to be an easy 98-99% on finish and mechanics, but no box. Will put up pics once I get it home.

A dash 6 is usually a full lug.
Nice snag....though I suspect that you weren't fully patient for them to put it down. ;-)
I remember once walking in to my LGS and immediately spotting a desirable rifle on the rack. I no sooner spotted it and a guy nearer to the counter asked to look at it. I hovered about ten feet away, waiting for him to put it down or hand it back to the clerk....He did, right after he said, "I take it".
Grrr...so close!

What's the barrel length and price?

Thanks

Here are my 2. Somebody would have to pay a lot for me to part with these beauties.

Nobody would get my 1971, 6" P&R, 3T, Model 17-3 for $700 so man...ya done good. Mine is so much more accurate than me and it is a treat to watch my adult kids shoot that gun.

You are with a Fire Department so evidently your "accountant" is not aware of Policy No. "17-6-17-3 ETC" which states (IIRC)
" No bona-fide member of this department shall have in his/her possession a collection that is found to be missing a S&W Model 17. The S&W Model 17 is declared essential to the needs of the Department in order to keep morale at the highest levels"

At least I know that policy was in effect in 1972 when I was with Emerald Hook & Ladder in upstate NY. My accountant I'm sure was suspicious....but went along with it.:D

Enjoy that M 17 when you rescue it from jail, and congrats for being on the good side of "you snooze...you lose".

The dash-6 was the transition from the classic ribbed target barrel to the full lug barrel and the combats came with the full lug version. I have a BEBxxxx Model 17-6 (my first handgun!) and it has the classic barrel and the same Goncalo Alves Target stocks that all the 586 and 686's shipped with.

For years, literally, it blew my mind that S&W would make such a massive change (the barrel style/profile) and yet not also change the dash number. It was explained to me by someone in these pages that the likely reason for no generation change was simply because the barrel evolution did not involve changing any other parts, as in... all the new style barrels didn't mate up dependent in changes -- only the barrel was different.

It's been my observation that more dash-6's have the full lug barrel and beautiful Combat stocks than my earlier version, which simply looks like most of the 17's that preceded it.

For $700, you got a fantastic buy!

The wife gets to know about the new guns that I bring home like I get to know about the new handbags she brings home. Besides, it's more fun that way.

Happened to me at the Wanenmacher when I spotted what I hoped was an H&R .357 Magnum carbine on a rack at a table. Turned out it was, and it disappeared with the guy who picked it up just as I started to reach for it.

Haven't seen one since.

Have a 17-6 with a 4" heavy barrel. S&W used up the 17-5 heavy barrels on the early -6's. The 17-5 with a 4" barrel replaced the model 18. It will be at the club Christmas party tomorrow night for sale. Larry

When you put those sexy little guns in a dark safe, they multiply. My "accountant" is still trying to figure out where two safes full came from. I always have some mad money tucked away in the even that a good deal shows up.
