The Model 1896 was designed to use 38 Double Action hard rubber stocks, which then became the standard for the Model 1903 and several successors. There are a few pre-WWII I Frame stocks that will not fit a standard I Frame, like those found on Regulation Police revolvers and some 22-32 HFTs. Those had butt-frames with a step on the back leg of the frame and took a special set of stocks to fit them. Roy stated that all stocks on 1896s were hard rubber and could be either round butt or extended square butt targets.

battle,

No, only Rd Butt I and J frame Service and Mini Magna grips up thru 1952 fit the Model 1896.

The Model of 1953 I and J frame introduced the 1/8" longer rd butt Magna grips. These will only fit the 1896 with 1/8" trimmed from the bottom.

Others that will fit:

Target walnut extended two screw stocks, introduced beginning with the Model 1891 single shot, and 1st available in 1904 on the .32 Model 1903-1st Change as optional plain and checkered, with 'dished' stock circle; and medallions beginning 1910. These pre war 2 screw extension target stocks will fit the 1896 perfectly and all pre 1953 I frames and pre 1953 round butt 'Baby' J frames.
